Summary
There’s a door in the lighthouse that neither Gem nor Grian dares to open. It is the same as the two others on this floor, with a carved abalone shell embedded above the doorframe and a simple pewter doorknob at hip height. The door sits quietly between the two as Gem and Grian pass through them day by day, but never do they linger by the door, and seldom do they look. It’s just another reminder of a truth they hate to remember: Pearl is not coming back.

Summary
She glances towards the door separating the gathering room from the study. “Cleo,” she calls, knowing the other vampire is in there, “come and sit by the fire.”
It’s a moment before Cleo responds. “Maybe later, Pearl. I’ve got some things I need to finish up.”
Pearl’s expression falls. She doesn’t answer, instead petting Oscar a few more times. Her eyes linger on the fireplace as a myriad of emotions begin to bubble inside her. She’s asked Cleo to join her countless times over the past week, and every time Cleo is simply too busy. Each time, those words sting more than the last; each time, they make it clear as day: Cleo has things more important than Pearl.

As the winter solstice draws near, Pearl aches with loneliness. She misses her friends, she misses her family, but most of all she misses Cleo, who has been strangely distant over the past couple months. But when Pearl ends up in a situation she can't escape, she realizes Cleo loves her, even if they don't always show it.

Summary
“It can’t be,” Jimmy says, tears gathering in his eyes. He checks the tab list, but only finds the truth he tried to avoid. There, greyed out at the bottom is the one name he wishes he could bring back: Tango.
He doesn’t know why there’s a heaviness to the thought. Normally, he’d be happy to not be the first one out. But this is Tango, his ally, his friend, his– he’s not sure what Tango is to him. He’s an ally, not a teammate; there’s no reason his death should leave Jimmy’s chest so hollow, the world so empty.
There’s no reason it should feel like a part of Jimmy died.
