    It's not like Mel is particularly fond of Dmitri. She isn't. A conversation with Dmitri is intellectually as captivating as a lecture by Professor Bolbok in the early morning. On his better days, that is. Not that either of these men aren't intelligent enough to hold her attention. They just lack a certain intrigue. Something that makes her ears pique with interest.

    Dmitri is — as charming as he's trying to be in this given moment — not much more but means to an end. Which end? Mel isn't entirely sure yet. She hasn't put much thought into her decision to step close; to throw her braided hair over her shoulder; to tap his upper arm with a curious smile on her lips. The only thing she has put thought into is that the watchful pair of eyes resting on her every movement will take as much note of this as she has of the many admirers he has gathered around him.

    Or: Mel and Jayce have been seperated for five weeks and the first time they attend the same party since their break-up results in a jealousy standoff. Or so they say.

    “Come now,” she murmurs. “You’ve fought far too bravely to die now.”

    Mel finds herself wishing she could stay by the young man’s side, but she knows there’s no time. She starts to move, her eyes already on the water, when the sailor’s—Jayce’s—hand tightens ever so slightly around hers. Her gaze flits back to him. His eyes are half-open and unfocused, his lip trembling with the effort of trying to speak. When he does, he can only manage to grit out two words.

    “W-wait…please...”

    Mel almost smiles.

    And then she disappears into the sea like she was never there, leaving her prince alone on the shore.

    She was gone faster than he would have liked, but it was no small delight to watch her leave, all rounded hips and gold tattoos as the crowd parted to grant her passage. Viktor sat on the sidelines and watched the shapes of Mel and Jayce and Sky—of beautiful bodies twirling about the marble floors and gilded halls, almost too decadent to watch in their perfection.

    At least the wolf her mother made her out to be.

    The room stays silent.
    Her thoughts stay loud. The inner turmoil grows from a slow grumble to a loud storm. Even the fiery taste of the liquor does nothing to stop her from feeling.

    "This is the mother I know best," a smile on her lips that doesn't reach her eyes, nor her heart, "Silent."
