Summary
“I know, I know.” Alec coos, reaching for the kitten. “I didn’t mean to step on your tail. I didn’t mean to hurt you. Let me take you to my boyfriend’s loft. He’s a warlock, he’ll be able to fix you up as soon as he gets back.”
The kitten stops hissing, but continues to eye Alec warily while trembling. Cautiously Alec lets the kitten sniff the back of his hand, before gently scratching the kitten’s head. Slowly the kitten stops shaking and presses its head further in Alec’s hand, clearly enjoying the head rubs.
Alec laughs.
“Okay I’m going to pick you up now.” Alec stops petting the kitten. It looks up at him with a soft merow? as if asking why Alec stopped. “Don’t scratch me, please.”
Alec reaches underneath the kitten’s stomach and carefully lifts it up. To his surprise, the kitten doesn’t seem alarmed. It meows at him, and slowly blinks. Alec remembers himself barely resists the urge to coo at it. He’s a fully trained shadowhunter. He does not ‘coo’ at small helpless kittens.
Alec speed walks the rest of the way to Magnus’s apartment.

In other words, Magnus goes missing and Alec finds a black cat.

Summary
Magnus is turned into a dragon and appears to be stuck that way. (This is not how he pictured his Tuesday going.)
Alec is called to handle a disturbance that involves a dragon and meets a creature that is scared and in need of protection.
Within minutes of meeting each other, they are inseparable, with Alec taking responsibility for the small dragon, and Magnus taking advantage of the protection offered by the shadowhunter.
Neither of them is expecting a convenient arrangement for them both to evolve into something much, much more.

Summary
Jace blinks, peering at the loft in vague stupefaction. “This,” and Alec’s parabatai’s voice sounds like he’s dragging each noise out from his exhausted mind and forcing it out before he can forget what word he just discovered. “Isn’t the Institute?” The final phrase comes out as a question.
Alec tilts his head in puzzlement, glancing at his brother as if wondering how he could possibly consider that Alec had taken them there instead of here. “No?”
Alec’s head moves back to level and he narrows his eyes instead. “We said we were going home after patrol.”
The ‘ergo, we are home now’ wasn’t said, but it was obvious in implication.
