“What is that?” Ilya asks. Menacingly.
Shane looks around their kitchen. “What is what?”
“This.” Ilya shakes his collagen powder. “New protein?”
“Oh my god. It’s collagen, you freak.”
Ilya narrows his eyes. He looks genuinely dangerous. Shane’s getting kind of hard, which is really embarrassing but par for the course in this relationship. “Not… meal replacement?”
Ah. There goes Shane’s boner.
“I’m eating fine,” Shane snaps. As if he’s a fucking child. As if he can’t follow all the nice little suggestions on the nice little printouts from the nice little therapist. As if he’s scared of solid food. As if he’ll die at the sight of an Oreo.
Ilya comes closer, warm at his side, presses a kiss to his neck. Shane sighs. “I only worry,” he murmurs, and Shane settles. He knows that. “First time you are alone in the house for so long since therapy, ah? And I have never seen this… callogen.”

Lovers, or, English is a damn funny language by Basingstoke

Summary
Ilya asked Shane’s father while Shane and his mother were talking outside: “Is boyfriends correct? Lovers is incorrect, but I am not sure what is correct.”
“Well,” Mr. Hollander said. “‘Lovers’ is usually used for, hm, a mistress or an affair. Something kind of sordid. Though--you would say Romeo and Juliet is a play about two lovers,” he said. He paused his knife on the chopping board. “Somehow that’s right and using it for real people isn’t right. English is a damn funny language, Ilya."
“Yes,” Ilya said from the bottom of his heart.

He was silent, after that, until he thought he could speak without breaking down. “Many gay activists have been arrested. Many gay men have been beaten and murdered just for existing, quietly, without activism," he said, his vocie low and quiet. "If I return home I think I will certainly be arrested for promoting homosexuality. And then—prison, as known gay man, and with all the police and guards knowing that Alexei Rozanov wishes me only the worst. Prison is extremely overcrowded. There might be 100 men in a single cell and they are encouraged to beat and abuse other inmates. I am not as famous in Russia as in Canada, but I am famous enough. It would quickly be known who I am. So I am very afraid of prison,” Ilya said. “I am a hockey player. Fighting on the ice is just playing. It will be broken up by referees. Off the ice, I could fight one man, maybe two, maybe three, but not twenty, and not day after day after day.”
Ilya paused again. “Is this enough.”
“Yes,” Pari said softly.
“Okay. I need a cigarette,” he said, getting up and going outside.
His hands were shaking, but he managed to get his cigarette lit.
Shane opened the door and stepped out onto the balcony. “You will not like smelling like smoke,” Ilya said.
“I need a shower anyway.” Shane walked around Ilya and sat sideways in his lap. He leaned his head against Ilya’s neck. “So that’s what you were afraid of? All this time?”
“Yes.” Ilya sucked on his cigarette. “It may be that I would go to a penal military unit instead, since I am big and strong. I don’t know. I don’t think that would be better.”
“Penal military unit??”
“It goes in front of the regular army as shock troops.”
“Ilya.”
“I have been very, very afraid,” Ilya said. He put out his cigarette and wrapped Shane in his arms. He rested his head on Shane’s shoulder. “But I am safe now, yes? They tell me I am safe.”
He didn’t know what feeling safe felt like. Maybe it was the feeling he had at the cottage, where everything was warm and comfortable.
“We should go back in,” he told Shane.
Shane kissed him. “You’re safe,” he said. Shane was unsmiling, and tense. He looked like he was trying to believe it, too.
They stood up and went inside.
“Ilya,” Pari said. “The paperwork is all in. Photographs, medical exam, proof of funds, qualified employer, all of it. We just need to get your Canadian travel papers issued. You are, right now, a protected person, and we have your application for permanent residence submitted. Canada will not obey any requests for extradition from Russia.”
Ilya nodded.

Summary
There’s no humor in Shane’s voice. It’s cold, hard, determined. “When we meet them on the ice next season, I want to fucking destroy them.”
After a moment, he feels Ilya nod thoughtfully behind him.
“Is good plan. Let’s fucking destroy them.”
The Montreal Voyageurs won't stop slinging mud at Shane in the press, so Shane and Ilya decide to get revenge the best way they know how.

Then the silence is punctuated by a woman’s scream.
Shane lifts his head dazedly. The first thing he sees is the blood. It’s splattered in a long arc, reaching almost to the center line. Shane follows the blood trail back, back, back, with his eyes, until he realizes that his elbow is in a pool of of it. As he stares into his own dark reflection, the surface of the puddle is disturbed by a fresh, violent spray of blood and his reflection ripples out of focus.
Shane turns and meets Eric Wong’s shocked gaze. Eric has one gloved hand pressed to his own throat. There’s blood spurting and cascading from behind it with a truly absurd degree of volume and force. It’s spraying so violently that it doesn’t even look real. It looks like a cartoon, or a cheesy horror movie.

Bookmarker's Notes
“I want to be the most important person in your life. Forever. Is that awful?” Shane looks up at him through tearsoaked lashes and Ilya feels nauseated with how much he loves him.
“No,” Ilya shakes his head, brow drawn in despair. “No…” he mutters again.
“I want to be your baby,” Shane sobs again, fresh tears breaking through like wild birds across the evening sky. “I want to be your baby,” he repeats in a way that skews towards demand. Like he is not just admitting to a want. He is asking it of the world at large.
“You are.” Ilya rocks him. “You are my baby.”
“My baby. My baby. My baby.”
