Kaveh and Alhaitham aren’t friends now, not anymore, but old habits are hard to quit. Somehow, on quiet evenings like this, they keep slipping under each other’s skin.
“Kaveh.”
Kaveh holds very still. His mouth is dry, but he quells the urge to lick his lips for fear of catching the taste of Alhaitham’s skin.
Instead, he looks at Alhaitham, seeing the tension of his clenched jaw, the tint pinkening his cheeks. His eyes rise so their gazes meet, and Kaveh sees a question there. Understands the context of this touch, the finger at his mouth, the firm thigh nudging tight against his own.
“It’s only sex,” Alhaitham had said, the first time they had relapsed in the sun-yellow kitchen.

"You're gonna need a lawyer," Dori says, blunt, already typing away at lightning speed. Kaveh feels the sugary taste of the cake pop sour in his mouth, and is now thankful his latte is slowly cooling on the coffee shop counter rather than all over the floor. "A good one."
"I don't..." Kaveh hasn't ever needed a lawyer. Not an actual one. He's only ever been to court as a witness, for his integrity and expertise in appraisal. He doesn't even know where to start finding one that's good enough for something like this.
Dori looks him up and down, obviously reading his mind just like any time she so much as glances at him. Then she sighs, presses a button, and Kaveh gets an e-mail. "Use mine, then. Don't complain about how much he costs, though. He's worth it."
The other recipient has a name that's both familiar and unknown. Alhaitham. Where has he heard that before?
