Summary
This is it, Claude thought as he stood in formation, his nails digging crescents into his skin. They’ll never want to see me, not like this. I’m broken, a freak. Claude looked down at his lower half, the remnant of his leg, now a nub just above the knee, his body supported on one crutch. He wouldn’t be surprised if none of them showed. I mean, who would want to see him like this?
He stood there silently, watching others teary eyed, reuniting with their families, their children. Claude didn’t have any of that. He had nothing.
Claude looked up, just then spotted a very . . . familiar looking afro in the crowd, his eyes lighting up, his brows furrowed, trying to get a better look and make sure he wasn’t going crazy.
Claude only fully believed it when he saw the five of them push their way to Claude– Hud, Woof, Jeanie, Sheila, and Berger.

Claude comes back from war, and he's not confident in himself with his new injuries. But, with the help of Berger, he grows confidence in how much he is supported, and he works out some kinks in him and Berger's relationship caused by the war.

Claude, being a secluded kid in the middle-of-nowhere Oklahoma, naturally didn’t get many girls.
And to be honest, he didn’t think his luck was getting any better now in New York. I mean, he was this proper guy amidst a group of hippies, so yeah, not good luck. Not that he would trade the tribe for anything, just . . . he needed some play. Bad. He was just a little . . . pent up, to say the least.
But weed did help. I mean, when you can’t feel anything it’s a bit easier to deal with things, eh?
