During the summer of 1987, Chess Life magazine sponsored their second-ever 10-day chess-themed cruise, both as a way to raise money for American chess efforts and as an opportunity to provide chess enthusiasts with a fun vacation tailored to their interests. On top of the luxury of the ship itself, they would be making stops in San Juan and Nassau.
Freddie quickly accepted an invitation to attend as a guest and take part in the programming, on the condition that he would be supplied with an extra family suite along with his own room.
