When Komaeda wakes up, Hinata will get up and get them some food, maybe. He knows that Komaeda likes the dry cinnamon biscuits and banana muffins, and Hinata needs a bottle of orange juice (or maybe some more coffee). They’ll talk quietly about anything they like, Komaeda’s raspy giggles motivating Hinata to keep the conversation afloat-- in turn, he’ll listen to Komaeda talk about The Raven again, for despite all the times he’s discussed it, Hinata would still listen. They’ll kiss softly-- on the cheek, the forehead, the mouth, the neck-- and they’ll intertwine together,
and in the same breath. Komaeda will remind Hinata that he is dying, and Hinata will breathe through his nose and try not to cry.

Without missing a beat, Komaeda brushes the dust from all those old televisions off of their jacket. "I told you, I'm fine..." they pout. Hinata fixes them with an incredulous stare. Komaeda huffs, too tired to keep pouting. Hinata's nature as a worrywart does get a little exhausting, after all. They don’t see what the big deal is. They’ve been through worse, haven’t they? Even if Hinata only means well, Komaeda still wishes that he would have a little more faith in them. "If it'll put your mind at ease, Hinata-kun," they say, "you can inspect my body for injuries yourself."
after years of unresolved romantic and sexual tension, komaeda finds an opportunity to take their relationship with hinata to the next level.

This time, Hinata pulls away his hand and looks up. Komaeda isn’t looking back at him, face red like it has been rubbed raw. He is far too open, far too honest, and Hinata keeps pushing through barbed wire with bare hands in the hopes that he’ll find something, that piece of himself that Komaeda keeps hidden, something shaky and stumbling in the light of day.
Komaeda goes missing for a morning. It shouldn't matter. And then it does.
In which Komaeda has the emotional intelligence of roadkill, military bases have more than one use, and absolutely no one is any help at all.

Thankfully, he’s not doing it alone--he’s got Nagito at his side, and the only thing difficult about their relationship now is the budding, unspoken feelings between them. That… definitely won’t be a distraction.

HIATUS: this fic is on hiatus bc i've been stuck. I think I wrote myself down a few sideroads I shouldn't have gone down, and I deleted the last 2 chapters. Pretty sure I haven't given up on it yet but tbh not sure when I'll get back to it

Summary
Nagito Komaeda had long ago accepted the fact that requited love was something he could never have. He didn’t even long for it, really; he loved truly and deeply, and he didn’t care whether or not it was returned. He loved everyone on the island, and everyone else who had the talent to create a hope powerful enough overcome all despair. That was enough to sustain him.
Apparently, however, his body had decided one of those loves in particular was one that he needed to be returned. It had decided that it was either that or death.
