“Okay,” Kate says, stretching the word. “To be honest I didn’t think we were.”

The gingerbread man on Kate’s green sweater is half-covered in flour, but infuriatingly, that only adds to the charm as she leads Yelena to a spot in the middle of the kitchen, bringing Yelena’s hands to her own shoulders before taking hold of Yelena’s waist, slowly guiding their bodies into an unsteady rhythm that Yelena supposes could be called dancing.
“Did you remember to get the first batch out of the oven?”
With a hum, Kate spins them both in place once, her eyes glinting. “Let me see… I can’t smell anything burning, so I think I did. I also put on the second batch just before you got back, and I even remembered to set the timer and everything. I did the dishes, too.”
“I am impressed, Kate Bishop,” Yelena deadpans. “All that and you didn’t need to use the fire extinguisher even once.”

Harrow sometimes felt like she was losing the plot of her own life.
She didn’t do casual hook-ups, she never had. But with Gideon Nav, she couldn’t seem to stay away. Never mind that they only seemed able to get along when Gideon was getting Harrow off. And Gideon was willing to get Harrow off in empty rooms at house parties, in bar bathrooms, and one particularly memorable time in Gideon’s own bedroom while a MarioKart tournament was happening one room over.
All Harrow had to do was keep ignoring the pit in her stomach that seemed to get bigger every time Gideon left her alone after sex that seemed to suggest that maybe Harrow wasn’t actually having fun anymore. That maybe she wanted something more.

The crazy thing is that Harrow doesn’t even like her, the occasional blip at the sacred pool notwithstanding. Gideon dies for her – a stupid ordeal all around, the least said about it the better – and resigns herself to the Underworld, and that’s supposed to be that, right? Harrow isn’t supposed to come after her. Not till she dies herself, and Gideon is hoping that’s a long way off for a lot of reasons. She deserves at least a few decades without Harrow, after what that woman put her through.
But come she does, with her stupid furrowed brows and haughty chin and clomping step. With sculptor’s fingers and artist’s eyes and that same old obnoxious confidence in her own brilliance. Harrow bulldozes her way to to the Underworld and stands before the throne of the God of the Dead, running on the fumes of her own manic determination, and demands Gideon back.
And the Lord of the Underworld, John Gaius himself, says, “Wow. Let me think about that.”
