She kept going—her brother understood, agreed with her. Her father didn’t scare her. Ghosts didn’t scare her. Being away from home and being enrolled in a magic school didn’t scare her. Feeling the way she felt about Marcille didn’t scare her, either. It didn’t. It never would. But the way she felt about her own body, her own life—
That scared her, a little.

"I’ve told you not to treat my shop as a cafe! That table isn’t for sitting at, it’s for work!"
"… Can you go get me a coffee though, please?"
He grumbled as he did just that. "But you’re not getting backstore today. I still have a shop to uphold."
"Thursdays are slow days."
He maybe should have been miffed that she knew his shop’s business so well.She, of course, proceeded to get backstore later that evening.

Summary
The familiar power of magic flowed through her, mingling with the blood in her veins and the blood that ran down her staff, but it felt different than any other time she'd used it. It felt too big for her body, barely contained inside her, like the sheer force of it could split her skin and explode out of her. It crackled through her bones like lightning and they strained under the pressure, moments from snapping.
The air tasted burnt. Electric. The ancient words filled Marcille’s throat, choking, bursting out of her with such strength she wasn't even sure if it was her speaking them.
Never, for even a fraction of a moment, did she regret it. Not even when she felt her mouth fill with blood and her ribs crack, not even when she collapsed face-first onto the concrete.
“Marcille,” Falin gasped, the first word she could manage. Her own voice sounded foreign to her ears. Wrong.

These were things Falin knew. Things she’d read in books with her brother when they were young, huddled around an old tome babbling excitedly about every spare fact they found out.
“They say dragons choose one thing they love above all else and create a hoard of it to keep forever!” Laios had exclaimed with bright eyes, his finger tracing the outline of a huge pile of coins and jewels on the page, lovingly rendered with a dragon sleeping on top of it.

Summary
Just as she's wondering that, the door swings open, and Marcille immediately meets twin gazes as Falin and Laios both step into the room. Falin still looks worried, and even Laios looks uncomfortably bothered at the sight of Marcille sitting up, which she would be massively offended by if she weren't struggling to control her stupid body.
"Marcille! You shouldn't be upright yet!" Falin immediately scolds, and she rushes forwards to Marcille's side, pressing a hand to Marcille's forehead again– this, at least, feels familiar, easing the previous doubt. "The poison is still in your system, so you have to be careful, okay?"
"What… what happened?" Marcille croaks, wincing at the sound of her own voice– it cracks against her will, raspy and strained and leaving her just as breathless as sitting up had.
"You accidentally drank from my cup," Laios says, and he appears at Marcille's side before she even realizes he's moved, giving her a hard, undecipherable stare. "You don't remember?"
