When Gustave wakes to find Lumière decimated and his friends beaten and bruised, his first instinct is to run to the sound of Maelle’s voice calling his name; her cries like a battering ram to his fragile heart, smashing it to pieces. He doesn’t know how he’s alive, or why. But when he tries to hug her — to hold his darling girl in his arms — she collapses.
And that’s when he realizes something is very wrong.
TLDR; Gustave was revived in Act III but something went horribly wrong.

But Maelle NEEDED it to continue..Blinded by grief and desperate to live a full life with her brother still alive and her family close. Over the years she's kept Lumiere running and refused to leave, she's grown weaker, and her hold on the Canvas and everyone in it is deteriorating pretty heavily... When Gustave starts noticing the cracks in the illusion, in particular the scars on her hands and his memories of the Stone Wave Cliffs, it's a sign to Verso that she doesn't have long before staying in the Canvas kills her..and they need to act soon if they're going to save her life.

Or, the Maelle ending, but its been a few years, and Maelle is slowly dying both inside the Canvas and in the real world outside. She's no longer able to hide the little mistakes from Gustave, and her hold on his memories that's kept him happy and complacent is fading. He seeks out Verso for help, and they both realize that they don't have long to save her before she deteriorates beyond the point of no return.Bookmarked by redcactusify

Summary
Gustave died on that cliff, he knows he did. And yet he wakes up in Lumiere to find the number on the monolith gone, the Expeditioners of 33 and the last Gommage alive, and Maelle's hair is white.
Secret third ending to the game where Maelle and Verso found a compromise that will eventually lead to a happy ending for both of them. Gustave has to process what he's been through and Verso has to learn to live again, maybe with the help of Gustave ;)
