“What the hell was that incantation you spat earlier?” Miles asks.
Phoenix’s lips twitch.
“Limp Bizkit,” he answers. And then he adds, desperate, “Please say it. Please, Miles. For me.”
Miles cringes. But, behold, he parts his lips and delivers a beautiful, beautiful:
“Limp biscuit.”
And the laugh this provides Phoenix carries him all the way into the royal blue sky that stretches across the afternoon, where Truce calls him up and he can finally give her the news. Calm, clinical:
“I’m stuck in the land of shit and honey with Miles Edgeworth. Hold down the fort for me.”

(In Florida for a legal conference, Phoenix and Miles find their flight home cancelled courtesy of a hurricane churning through the panhandle, and thus decide to take a little road trip.)

“What are you gonna do?”
“I don’t know…” Miles says, and his hands tighten around the steering wheel. “I’m not used to having the choice.”

Is that what he's doing here, Kristoph as his maligned piano? Kristoph readjusts his glasses and then touches his cheek, fingers very light. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah," Phoenix says, clears his throat. "Sorry, just lost in thought."
Kristoph feeds him salad and duck and wine, and Phoenix eats it all out of his hand. Kristoph puts his hands to Phoenix's hair, his shoulders, his thighs. The graceless collapse of it all, and how nothing has really changed; he steps out onto the street still, and the sun glances off the windows the same as it always has. Kristoph is his total comedown, his moon dust, his blister and his isopropyl.
Or, spend enough years in stasis with the same person and things start to go a bit lopsided.

Oh, this was delightful.
Kristoph feeds him salad and duck and wine, and Phoenix eats it all out of his hand. Kristoph puts his hands to Phoenix's hair, his shoulders, his thighs. Good dog, good dog. He dreams about him more than he's ever dreamed about anyone else, that's how all-encompassing it is.

"You are very easy," Kristoph says, lets the statement linger. "Very, very easy. I can read it off of you. You like to think that you're different from me, but look how you've warmed to the task. God, you'd bark if I asked you to."

This is how it goes. Consider the widening gap and the gaps between trains running on parallel tracks, and consider the Mishams and their sad eyes and the dreariness of their little studio and consider little Trucy Wright almost vibrating with excitement for the big trick she would soon get to pull and consider Mia Fey's eyesight doubling and tripling and fading and consider-and Kristoph is bending clean in two, maybe, or maybe he's kissing him now, or maybe he's making to leave, but some part of him will always be here, phantasmic under Phoenix's fingernails…

“We’ve got three days to file everything,” Athena said. “No buffer."
Phoenix nodded, reading from a legal pad. “We’re going with five filings total, staggered. First wave: 402 Motion and Motion to Compel. Second wave: 1538.5 Motion to Suppress, then a Motion in Limine pre-trial. 995 Motion draft stays in the back pocket in case prelim goes sideways. You two handle the Compel and Suppress. Focus on chain of custody and device access. Get it clean and cite 1538.5 just in case they fished something without a warrant.”
“What about the livestream?” Apollo asked.
Phoenix didn’t blink. “I’m handling the 402.”
Pause.
“Of course you are,” Athena said, without looking up.
“This isn’t about ego,” Phoenix said, already opening his laptop. “It’s about framing. That footage is the prosecution’s narrative keystone. If we can shake intent before prelim, we force them to rethink their theory.”
“Right,” Athena said, “and it has nothing to do with the fact that your prosecutorial counterpart is your emotionally complex maybe-soulmate.”
