Was what he wanted to say after Lucy had bared her heart to him and said the thing they’d both been too afraid to say out loud. But as she stared at him in earnest, with her huge brown eyes glassy with emotion, he hadn’t been able to say anything. In the back of his mind he heard Isabel’s voice, at the rehab center saying she couldn’t live up to his expectations. And he heard his dad’s voice, in the hospice, telling him that he was who he was because of him.
Lucy didn’t deserve to be with someone like him, she was too good for him. He would ruin her, like he’d ruined everyone else who got too close, and he couldn’t do that to her.
Tim lets his inner demons win and the conversation in the courtyard with Lucy goes a different way. He lets her go and decides to push everyone away, preferring to live his life alone rather than let anyone else in. Until he's visited by the ghosts of his past, present and future who take him on a journey to realize the life he's supposed to have.
