“Are you okay?”
A lump formed in Mike’s throat. There was an obvious answer. No, of course he wasn’t okay. No one who was okay would be living like this, a room in disarray, shutting out everyone, failing at everything.
He avoided Will’s worried eyes, feeling the weight of all he couldn’t say: the nightmares, the spiraling thoughts, the guilt clawing at him even in sleep. He couldn’t tell Will, not yet.
“Yeah,” Mike finally let out, quiet, weak. “I’m okay.”
Will’s gaze didn’t waver. His lips pressed together, his eyes sharp.
“Okay,” he said slowly. "Let me rephrase that." Then, with a quiet authority that made Mike freeze, he added, “You’re not okay.”

The room didn’t go quiet so much as it stilled, like the air itself had braced. Forks paused halfway to mouths. Someone’s glass clinked softly against a plate and then was set down too quickly.
Lainey had been carrying the question around for weeks now, rolling it between her teeth whenever she heard the name drift through conversations she wasn’t meant to be listening to. Eleven. Always spoken softly. Always followed by a sigh, or a pause, or the way her dads’ faces seemed to fold inward just a little. She’d wondered why she’d never met her. Why everyone seemed to miss someone she didn’t know.
