Edwin Payne was the best necromancer the Fifth House had ever produced. Death had touched his hands and his mouth and his eyes, had cradled his skull and marked him as its favourite son. He had plumbed depths of Fifth House history that had slumbered untouched for centuries, mining long-forgotten seams of knowledge. Madeleine has taken to the gift like a duck to water. That's my woman, I knew she would. She likes to learn from me, and I like to teach her. I'm a good teacher, I think. A kind one. We bound about the fields surrounding the cottage, practicing her new vampiric speed, jumping around from tree to tree and rolling over each other like kittens. “What am I going to do with your name?” Max asks, a little incredulous.
“Whatever you want,” the salesman says. “Didn’t you want something real?”
Max heard a story once about the importance of answering questions like that carefully. If something emerges from the forest and asks for your name, don’t give it up, the story went. Offer only what you know you can live without. She’s never heard a story that tells her what to do when something emerges from the forest and offers its name to you.

Summary
The Wizard King’s reputation preceded him wherever he went, wherever the roaming form of his impossible moving castle carried him. His was a reputation drenched in blood and carnality, in licentious desires and grisly ends. A reputation of dangerous beauty, intoxicating charm; of a smile sharp when it grinned into the bright young faces of hapless townspeople, and sharper still when it sank into their chests to taste their beating hearts.
A chilling little story, to be sure, and a concerning one to have slunk its way to their doorstep, but Edwin wasn’t overly worried about it.
After all, the Wizard King only ate the hearts of the pretty ones.
He was Edwin Payne of Payne & Sons Bespoke Tailoring; he was always and only of Payne & Sons. Such was his station in life, a role he himself was tailor-made for. A role he fit like a drab but finely-crafted glove. And so it went—until the day a wizard and a witch conspired to turn his tidy little life upside down.
