    Gabriel O’Hara showed up at his brother’s apartment at eleven-oh-seven PM, sharp—on a work night, because of course his older brother couldn’t just be convenient for once in his life—in response to a distressing holo-message from Miguel that began with him falling over from a seated position and ended with a teary, slurred rant in such white-man Spanish that their mother would’ve hit him upside the head with an ¡Hablemos!: Gramática para Niños book if she’d heard it.

    Although Gabriel would’ve much preferred to just let someone like Lyla or Dana (or, like, Xina, he supposed, if she and Miggy were still on speaking terms?) take the lead and comfort his wreck of a brother, Miguel had called him, and by decree of familial obligation Gabriel had no choice but to deal with his idiot supergenius older brother who was an asshole most of the time and also a stupidly emotional drunk.

    OR,

    Over time, and against his will, Miguel finds out how to love himself.

    With his nocturnal circadian rhythm, dislike of sunlight, gaunt features, red eyes, and fangs, Miguel O’Hara got mistaken for a vampire so frequently he didn’t really have it in him to correct people anymore. It was probably for the best; vampires were an easy concept to understand, which absolutely could not be said for what Miguel really was.
    Peter B. shrugged and said, “you look pretty human to me.” And Miguel tried not to laugh.

    Huge thank you to my beta reader as well as to the person who helped me with the Spanish dialogue!
    Title is from "Self-Love" by Metro Boomin & Coi Leray because I may be creative but I am not creative with titles.
    Fic is based on the Spider-Verse movies as well as the Spider-Man 2099 comics. Rape/Non-Con tag is not between Peter and Miguel.

    “Would you rather be an android, Lyla?”

    “I don’t believe I have a choice in the matter.”

    “Well... if you really want to try it, I could see if Xina is willing to help work something out.” Strolling around, Lyla follows Miguel like a ghost. “What brought this on?”

    “Going on errands together seemed… nice.”

    “I do take you out with me sometimes, you know. You aren’t restrained within the apartment. If you want to go out more, we’ll go out more. The problem is Miguel doesn’t go out unless it’s work or it’s the S-Man, and I can't have you giving away his identity. Next time I go see Xina, I’ll bring you along. How’s that sound?”

    “That’d be nice, Miguel," she claps her hands together and smiles. "I’m looking forward to it.” With that, she disappears from his side and Miguel pinches the bridge of his nose, knowing he’ll have to go visit his ex-girlfriend for an artificial intelligence play date.

    Miguel doesn’t want to tell him. He wants to keep living in this week, with a Miles Morales who laughs and cracks jokes and relaxes in his presence, where peace seems tangible instead of an impossible horizon.

    He doesn't want this to end.

    Miles loses his memories of the past two years. It brings some uncomfortable revelations to light.
