But really, what did Verso expect from the same man who’d kept track of his heat cycles the moment they started dating, all because he wanted to make sure he could be available if Verso needed him? He figures he should just be thankful that Gustave is Gustave, and isn’t some obsessive stalker/serial killer (although Clea’s still convinced otherwise, because of course she is).
(Or: In which Gustave and Verso suck at being exes, and Gustave knows way too much about Verso's heats.)

Before Maelle leaves the canvas for good, she fulfills Verso's wish to be mortal but also makes him promise to look after Gustave. Even though he's reclutant at first, Verso quickly discovers that maybe it won't be that difficult to keep that promise. Gustave's company is not so bad and maybe he does have it in him to try to enjoy life again.

He freezes, paralyzed; his arms are held down again, stripping him of the ability to defend himself, and a familiar-unfamiliar voice is ringing in his ears, and he is tugged and turned around, and soon the bruises on his wrists are going to be the least of his problems, because… because…
“Verso. Verso, look at me. Hey, look at me.”
Or: Maelle brings back a certain someone from Verso's past. Things do not go well, and Verso ends up on the doorstep of the only person in Lumière who makes him feel safe.
