The fall brings the start of Nick’s last year of high school, increasingly bad weather and lectures from his dad, and a new student to Sunnyvale High. Will calls her Shadysider trash under his breath when their mom isn’t looking, and later she pulls Nick to the side and says, “You’ll make sure she’s welcomed, won’t you sweetie? It’s so nice of Mr. Perry to bring his stepdaughters into his home. I’m sure the younger one in particular will need help adjusting.”
Privately, Nick isn’t too sure what’s so remarkable about it, but he nods for her sake. Mr. Perry’s new stepdaughters won’t impact him anyway.
Or: Ziggy and Cindy’s mom remarries a man from Sunnyvale, and Ziggy is forced to attend Sunnyvale High.

“Ziggy,” he murmurs, cutting through the haze of anxiety surrounding her like a knife. “Ziggy, I’ll take care of both of you.”
“It’s not you that concerns me.”
“I’ll handle Will,” he assures her.
She hears him approach, feels the warmth radiating from his body as he comes up behind her. She shivers as he reaches out with one hand and glides it up and down her spine.
“You’re going to be safe,” he continues lowly, “and happy, and mine.”
He punctuates each word with a kiss to her shoulder, the curve of her neck, the tips of her ears.
Mine.
Her anxiety ebbs at the thought. It’s not such a terrible thing, she decides, to be his.
