Summary
Dick can barely stand because of the shock seizing his body. “What’s your name?”
The kid stares at him. He’s got a name tag, but Dick can barely see anything under the dim fluorescent-green lights, much less tiny text with his blurring vision.
“It’s Jason,” the kid answers tightly. “Are you high, man?”Series

Summary
Harvey stopped on the dead grass with his hands on his hips and eyed his available players. He didn’t know their names yet, but he would soon. They were wearing dark blue jerseys that read BISONS—was he really this small when he first started playing baseball?
Behind him, someone’s mom yelled, “You got this, Bradley! My little all-star!”
Harvey resisted the urge to point out that he was pretty sure Bradley was the one doing cartwheels in the daisies.(After his dad dies, Harvey becomes the coach of a little league team. Because anything is easier than therapy.)

Summary
“I miss daddy.”
She says it so much, Harvey’s almost numb to it.
“I miss him too, kiddo,” Harvey murmurs, brushing back her smooth hair into a ponytail. He thumbs the rubberband and does his best to twist it to make sure her hair won’t tumble out.
Charlie meets his eyes through the mirror, kicking her little, sock-clad feet. “Are you and Mike s’posed to be my dads now?”
Harvey stops moving, and the ponytail unravels.(Marcus passes away. Harvey raises his daughter, and eventually, so does Mike.)

Summary
In Jack’s head, the line between them gets blurry sometimes, the distinctions between his and Robby’s experiences getting tangled together. Robby lost his arm in Iraq, just below the elbow, and Jack lost his leg in a motorcycle accident, all the way up to the pelvis. No, Jack lost the arm. No, he left his leg in Iraq. Robby left his arm on the interstate, somewhere in southern Ohio.

“Bruce, I don’t know if Daredevil cracked his skull but I don’t think he can hear us right now.”
There’s a pause before Bruce answers. “What do you mean you don’t think? Can’t he let you know if he can hear you or not?”
“Thing is, I also don’t think he recognizes us.”or

Summary
Robby wanted to reassure him, to reach for the words that he knew he had, to explain that Jack didn’t need to worry, nobody needed to worry, that this wasn’t a midlife crisis or a lack of attachment to his continued existence, that everything was always happening all the time, that sometimes walking into the Pitt felt like choking on something acrid burning in his chest, that his thoughts were always racing and people were always asking him things and he just wanted to escape, feel nothing in his chest but the rumble of asphalt and engine beneath him, the wind rushing in his ears and drowning out the alarms that hovered at the edges of his perception like hungry ghosts, and he was an eloquent goddamned man, he knew he was, but he couldn’t find the words. The layer of glass between him and the world, him and the man he wanted to be, him and the man everyone deserved — it was thick, leaded, double-glazed, institutional, a thin mesh of wires wrought through it to prevent it from shattering or being pierced with a bullet.Or: Robby buys a motorcycle. Jack does not approve.

Summary
He mutters, "I'm not letting go until you tell me what you're going to do when you've crossed state lines."
"I told you," Robby huffs, "Beer. Hot apple cider. Maybe a chicken pot pie on the porch of some good Samaritan who takes pity on me."
"Yeah? Chicken pot pie?" Jack hums, raising his eyebrows, receiving an affirming nod from the other. "Gonna go on a stereotypical-ass spirit journey? That's what you're going to do, Michael? That's the reason you hugged me like that? Like you were savoring it?"
/
And Michael Robinavitch would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for Jack Abbot.

Summary
“Can I help? Please, I want— Let me help.”
It’s all too much, but his last three words prove to be Robby’s tipping point, pushing him finally and fully over the edge.
Desperate, jerky, he nods against Jack’s shoulder. He just barely manages to choke out, “Please,” and, “I’m so sorry,” before Jack shushes him.
“Don’t be sorry,” Jack says on repeat. “Don’t you be sorry, it’s okay. It’s all going to be okay, I got you, brother, alright? Neither of us is going anywhere without each other, I can promise you that.”
or: robby contemplates taking his own life after his last shift before his sabbatical. jack sees right through him.
