Summary
The forest was strangely quiet. Where there would have been birdsong, or a rabbit racing across the path, there was nothing. Instead, the smell of smoke hung in the air. A masked shinobi crouched by the path, coughing harshly. A pair of children, a little girl and boy, sat next to him, holding each other’s hands tight. Their clothes were charred. A second masked shinobi, this one a woman, came out of the trees. There was blood splattered on her clothes. “Burned it all down. Those blood hunters didn’t stand a chance.” The coughing man looked up.
“Commander doesn’t-“ he coughed again, a rattle in his throat, “mess around, huh?” His partner nodded, crouching next to the children.
“What’s your name, little ones?” The girl looked at her with strange eyes. The boy moved protectively in front of her.
“Name...?” The other masked ANBU stopped coughing.
“Yeah. What did the men call you?” The little girl blinked dumbly. The boy tilted his head, watching them. The man looked at his partner. “Kami. Jackal, they didn’t even name them.” Jackal sighed, pulling a scroll from her vest.
“Why would they? Those men were bloodline thieves, Gecko. They didn’t care about these kids. They just wanted the money.”

Summary
Before his marriage collapsed, Greg Lestrade had often thought about having a child. Not romantically, nor on impulse, just a quiet, persistent longing, like a space inside him that never quite closed. A child to whom he could give the affection he had never received from the father who left too early.
Caroline did not want children, and Greg respected her choice.
But the universe is rarely lazy. One day, without warning, a one-year-old baby appeared at his door, left in a cardboard box, accompanied by DNA results and adoption papers bearing Greg’s name.
Greg swore to God, the child was his double at first glance. The only differences were the shock of ginger hair and the blue-grey eyes staring up at him. Eyes so familiar they were frightening.
