Summary
The first time it happened, Peem had run to his mother, scared and confused by the sudden onslaught of loneliness and fear that had swept over him out of nowhere. He had been young, and it had taken the better part of an hour (he found out years later) before his mother was able to calm him down.
That was the first time he had felt his soulmate’s emotional pain. It had returned throughout the years, a visceral reminder that his soulmate was lonely, or scared, or sad.
When he was six, and woke up depressingly lonely from a dream he hadn’t dreamt.
When he was nine, and he only just managed to run out of his classroom before bursting into tears.
When he was eleven, and was swept up in a wave of bitterness quickly followed by regret.
Peem began to hate those moments.
Why could he only feel his soulmate’s negative emotions? What good was it to know about his soulmate’s pain when he didn’t know who they were, and therefore couldn’t do anything to help?
His mother said it was his soulmate’s way of reaching out. People aren’t solitary creatures, after all, and that’s why soulmates reach out to each other somehow during harrowing moments.
Peem thought it was bullshit, honestly.

He had been expecting dappled sunlight and rustic wooden cabin walls and a fire pit to warm up by at nighttime. And he got the wooden walls certainly, but the rain has drowned out any possibility of the rest. It had started as a light shower as they were beginning their drive up and over the course of the 3 hours to Sai Yok National Park it had turned into a consistent pouring rain. Off-season and unpredicted by either of their fancy weather apps. But here they were, on a weekend getaway, that had gotten away from them before it had even begun.
Or, Phum deals with some fallout with his family on a weekend getaway and Peem is there and its mostly soft, emotional processing times.

Charles sighs, his shoulders slumping. “It’s just— I need to ask you something, and I don’t think you want to talk about it, is the thing. And I don’t wanna make you talk about something you don’t want to, and I don’t want to make you uncomfortable, but I think I need to talk about it.”
Edwin considers Charles’ words, and together with his frazzled appearance and the way he is holding his hand, he draws a conclusion. Something he wouldn’t want to talk about, indeed. “Do you wish to ask me about Hell?”
But Charles shakes his head, and says, “Not exactly, no. Not about Hell, but about… what you told me there. On the stairs.”
Ah.
Well. That is… much worse than discussing his 73 years and one day of unending torment.
Charles is still holding his hand.
