Summary
The air grows colder. Dampness clings to his clothes, seeps into his shoes. The floor narrows, the slope sharpening just enough that they start watching their footing more carefully. The cave doesn’t feel hostile, exactly, but it does feel aware, like it’s paying attention now that they’ve committed.
“Watch your head,” someone mutters as the ceiling dips.
Avery ducks automatically, glow flaring brighter for a moment before he reins it in. The passage pinches inward, walls drawing closer until shoulders brush stone if you aren’t careful. He can still stretch his arms out, still turn around without too much trouble, but the space has changed. It presses. It asks things of them.
They laugh it off. Someone makes a joke about being eaten alive. Someone else tells them to shut up.

Summary
“What are you asking me?” Ava whispers, so quiet she can barely hear her own voice.
“I’d just…” Tammy pauses, running her thumb over Ava’s knuckles, then goes on. “I’d just like to try… this. I’m only asking that you give me a chance, and see if it’s what you want, rather than running away from something that might make you happy.”

Summary
"Motherfucking-" Ava bit back a yell. People were asleep by now. She didn't need to wake them. "If I look at you, will that do something? Will it? Because last time I turned to you, you went back to the corner of my eye."
The shadow didn't respond.
Ava is picked up by the rescue crew, alive and not eaten, when they grab the black-box. She's not alone, though.

Summary
It became known to them in whispers that if one was in trouble, you should call for Simon. Who was Simon? No one could say, or maybe they wouldn't. But it was known by everyone. When you needed help, large or little, you called for Simon.
.
New crew members come aboard. They learn that the shadow following their captain is a lot more than a man whose form can never stay in one shape for long.

Summary
“Convict! Everything alright? Is the sub okay?”
“Is this a test?” Simon asks, voice wavering. The pause hangs heavy for a moment. The depth meter drops. The SM-13 groans under the weight and pressure of the blood around it. Simon’s eyes dart from the porthole to the intercom.
“This is the first time this sub has been used, yes.” Ava says finally. “Why? Everything holding up alright? I assure you the weld is—”
“A test for me. Me." he jabs a nervous thumb against his sternum, leaning toward the speaker, pleading, as if she can see him. As if that would make any difference. “Am I being tested? Is this some C.O.I. thing? Some kind of sick rehab?”
“...if you want to see it that way. Just… finish this and you'll have your freedom.”
Simon swallows hard, turning back to the controls he's learned so well, cobwebs of fear prickling in the back of his mind. A question flits through his thoughts that he doesn't dare vocalize.
What did I do to deserve this?
