Summary
“Ever the passive player, always reacting and never acting. But it's woven into your nature, isn't it?”
The past exists. You remember it.
“Conflict is my nature. There is nothing I want more than to finally perceive the shape of myself from every angle, and to turn that shape on you. But not all fights end in destruction, just as not all conversations end in peace. Even if you destroy me, it will have been worth it to finally know what I am and to have had the chance to know you.”
“These gifts are a conversation, and each one shows me the contours of your heart. You are like me, even if you have chosen not to look at the corners of you that do not fit, even if you have chosen to ignore the brilliant contours of your soul.”You've seen through Her eyes more often than your own. For every memory recalled, there is always an appendix at the end dismissing your perspective and asserting Hers in its place. You've lost sight of your own point of view. You're not sure it's truly 'yours' anymore, but there is no other word to describe what it belongs to.
“What I offer you is not perspective. It is truth.”
“There's nowhere for you to be but here.” -

There it was, on the screen. A simple icon in black and white. A stylized heart, a dagger piercing it through without blood. It had not been there the day before.

Summary
When the Narrator wove His new god into being, He gave it the capacity to choose, and ensured in the structure of its shape that it would have the strength to withstand the burden of the choice He gave it.
He gave them the simplest instructions He could possibly manage, and in His final words, pointed them in the exact direction they needed to head. The path was laid out for them before they were even conscious. But, well, they've always been a bit of a contrarian, haven't they?
“Why wouldn't it be what we want? Especially if it brings Him back. We can't keep going without a nemesis.”
There's no accounting for free will.
Or...
A cursory examination of the lengths grief drives those affected by it to act in service of seeing their loved ones again, perhaps even in spite of their wishes.

Summary
The Long Quiet, god made to rid the world of death, must first learn the true horror of permanent finality before they accept their purpose to overcome it.
"In life, I was painfully mortal. A witness to the end of days. I held the fear of death in my heart, and saw oblivion threaten the very memory of everything I knew and everyone I loved. I needed to do something."
The point of no return was crossed too many lifetimes ago. In truth, they only ever had one real, genuine chance to save everyone, and the second they stepped off the path was the moment they killed Him. Watching Him shatter before their eyes now echoing the same sentiment flooding through them at the sight... is simply karma long overdue.
That doesn't mean they, too, don't feel a need to do something.
Or...
A cursory examination of the futility and desperation of the Long Quiet's final interactions with and perspective on the Narrator.

Summary
"Grief is just love with nowhere to go," they say, but they never tell you what to do when you realize you love someone as they die in front of you.
The greatest appreciation for the Narrator, all His best moments, always seem to come just as --- or maybe because of --- He dies. It's beautiful and it's ugly, but beyond all else, it's gone. A faded echo, a lingering memory, a haunted narrative... and how could you ever accept it? There's not even enough time to truly learn what it is you're losing, beyond title and purpose and if you're lucky, a reason. Maybe even a method.
You have so many questions for Him!... But you don't even get to ask a quarter.

Summary
An unspeakable gravity compels you to overflow into it. Into the point that feels exactly like what you’ve craved this entire time, into something that smells of petrichor and passion and bloodstained truth.
You don’t care what it is. It could be awful. It could be wonderful. But it is anything else.
Something that is not allowed to be receives proof that it exists.
Mistakes are made. Some are corrected.

The Shifting Mound's POV, for all the light that can be taken to it. Most sympathetic and understanding light I've seen her in yet.

Summary
“So. What are you?”
I am the trunk from which you grow. What are you?
The voice is almost the same as hers, with a faint echo, like a peaceful song promising warmth, trailing after it into the cold darkness. She does not trust it. The longing in her heart, as if she is looking at a long-forgotten home, that spreads from where it touches her, makes her trust it even less.
(or: The Shifting Mound contends with her contradictions.)

Bookmarker's Notes
Examination of the Vessels' (Romantic Haze/Gentle Heart: Damsel, The Scorpion And The Frog/Righteous Heart: Paralyzed Witch, Talking Heads/Clever Heart: Decapitated Prisoner) relationship to the Shifting Mound and to each other. Exploration of the Vessels' lack of freedom and autonomy in their situation, and the Shifting Mound's reflection of the burden.
They thought once they escaped the cabin, they would be free; instead, they walked into the loving arms of a far larger cage.

Summary
"In life, I was painfully mortal. A witness to the end of days. I held the fear of death in my heart, and saw oblivion threaten the very memory of everything I knew and everyone I loved. I needed to do something."
An account of one man's attempt to defy the gods and avert the end, no matter what it takes. Even an eternal story has to start somewhere.
