“Grian,” says Scar, hesitant, and Grian whips his head to face him — Scar startles back a little — “Grian,” he repeats, uncharacteristically firm. “Tell me — tell me what I should do.”
Scar’s green eyes are bright and watery — anxious, afraid, so afraid — and Grian tears his own gaze away. He forces himself to speak, giving in to the plan that first popped into his mind, that’s formed almost fully now. It’s a good plan. It’s a horribly, horribly good plan.
“You need to stay with me,” Grian whispers, and he is a monster for it.

Hermit’s Hollow was a quiet town where you learned to ignore whisperings of nonsense and the dull, persistent feeling of being watched before you learned to ride a bike. To call it pedestrian would be a great disservice to all the terrible oddities occupying it— folks and legends alike.
Not that Grian believed any of them, of course.
Or; There's something wrong in Hermit's Hollow. There's something wrong with Grian. Neither of these are a surprise to him.

He skims the titles for a moment before finding one that he’s read several times over the past couple decades. Maybe a familiar story can ease him into sleep.
It can’t. Which is how, for the third night in a row, he’s awake to see the sunrise.
