Cale wants to protect his family. He'll do anything to do that. Even if it means destroying himself. Even if it means isolating himself from them.
Even if it means taking the hand of the stranger in the white mask who said that they could avoid death so long as Cale cooperated.
It's easy to lose track of time in the dark. He doesn't remember how long it's been. But he's going to protect them. It doesn't matter what he has to do.
The man in the white mask is letting him protect them. Right? He should be grateful...? He has power now, he's useful. He won't let them die.
AKA Cale is taken by the White Star when he's 10 and molded into something "useful."

Kim Roksoo knew his self-control was good, but he felt like the embodiment of patience after two weeks. Two long, torturous weeks of sharing a room beside Cale’s, watching him walk around in those pants that hugged his waist just right, the way his lithe arms flexed their muscles whenever he picked up Raon, and all that goddamned elegance. Despite his half-hearted tries to not to.
And Cale, that minx. He knew what he was doing to Kim Roksoo. Spent half of their daily meetings to undress Kim Roksoo with his eyes, like he was tasting fine wine, sip by sip. He knew he was driving Kim Roksoo up a wall.
As if sharing a body with his crush wasn’t hard enough, dealing with the less-than-holy thoughts (his own) will not leave Roksoo’s control unscathed. But sometimes, one does need to lose control.
Either way, Cale is happy with the results.
