It’s a quiet admission, spoken to the coffee maker instead of Steel as if that makes the words easier to get out. This was all supposed to be a carefully constructed play, once, and Dani can’t quite bring themself to admit that it’s begun to go horribly wrong; Ortega was an inevitability, they suppose — always was, even back then — but they’d never planned for the quiet camaraderie they have with Steel or the begrudging friendship that’s blossoming with Herald.
