Glinda twirls a strand of blonde hair around her finger, not meeting her eyes. “Tiny. Microscopical. Infinitesimal. Just a whisper of a coordinated multiyear plan involving publicists, historians, theater troupes, and a very spirited group of fans.”
Elphaba blinks.
Glinda smiles sweetly.
“Elphaba,” she says gently, “darling—to come back from a smear campaign, you simply must have good press.”

Summary
Elphaba isn’t interested in the Emerald City’s glittering social season or the machinations of its marriage market. She’s come to the City to support her younger sister's ascension to the throne and help her find true love. Luckily, Nessa falls in love at the first ball of the season. Unluckily, her new love interest’s older sister is insufferable.
Galinda, still reeling from a family tragedy, is just trying to shepherd her sisters through their first social season, marry her best friend, and restore her family’s finances. She’s not expecting the Queen of Oz to start courting her younger sister, or to have to spend so much time with Nessa’s prickly older sister, Princess Elphaba. At first, Galinda is happy to pretend that she's exactly the kind of brainless socialite that Elphaba thinks she is. But as first impressions fizzle out and she realizes the two of them are more alike than she could ever have suspected, Elphaba threatens to send Galinda’s carefully constructed facade spiraling and forces her to consider another path: one where they put their own happiness first, whatever the consequences.

“Fair enough,” Galinda sighed, shoulders shaking softly when she laughed. She propped her chin in her hand and chewed her bottom lip for a moment. Elphaba felt her face flush under her gaze. “You have beautiful eyes, Elphie.”

The memories of the Melting wouldn’t leave her, and neither did the grief. Glinda tried everything she could to fall asleep: switching rooms, rubbing lavender lotion on her hands, even drinking a foul tasting concoction that one of her handmaidens swore would put her to sleep as soon as her head hit the pillow (it didn’t). And even when she did manage to fall asleep sometime just before dawn, Elphaba’s screams jarred her awake.
So one night Glinda found herself sitting at the desk in her study with a blank sheet of paper in front of her. Dear Elphaba, she wrote, and then watched the words waver at the top of the page. She crossed them out and started over. Dearest Elphaba . It was ridiculous. Elphaba would never read her words again. But she found that they came anyway, faster than she could commit them to paper.
Or: Glinda begins writing letters to Elphaba in the aftermath of the Melting. When she pushes herself beyond the point of exhaustion four years later, Chistery decides to take matters into his own hands and deliver the letters to Elphaba in an attempt to save Glinda's life.
