Kaveh frowned. “Quite frankly, when you’re concerned with my affairs, it worries me.”
“And why is that?”
“Because nothing good ever comes from you being involved.”
That caused Alhaihtam to look up. It was a challenge, that look was. “I’d beg to differ. I’d say Sumeru as a whole has benefited greatly from my involvement.”
“I still don’t believe half of what you say about that situation for the record,” Kaveh said, but the fight had drained out of him when he remembered what Cyno said in the tavern. It was awful how his whole body softened, how years of instinct and fight or flight responses dimmed at the thought of memories about when things were different. Perhaps Alhaitham was a curse. That must be it. Kaveh glanced at his roommate in the corner of his eye. He sighed.

Summary
Each day, Kaveh is transferred to a different parallel reality, and in every single one of those, he and Alhaitham are together:
Waking up in Alhaitham’s arms felt more familiar on the third day. By the fourth, it was fully expected and, by the fifth, he found himself snuggling into those warm arms and sometimes smiling at the “Good morning, sweetheart,” before reminding himself of the situation and sitting down a very confused Alhaitham for a very confusing conversation. It’s not you he loves, he reminded himself, time and time again.

Summary
A fundamental shift occurs; Alhaitham isn’t sure of its timeline—sometime vaguely in the weeks after Kaveh’s graveyard visit—nor the exact reason for it. Perhaps it's related to the volume increase of Kaveh’s smiles, or the way he’s taken to tucking some of the flowers behind Alhaitham’s ear when he dozes off reading, or a decrease in that bitter undercurrent behind their arguments.
All Alhaitham knows is something is happening that he has little familiarity with, and the unease that’s come along with it is just as startling as the problem itself:
He’s losing control.

Summary
Alhaitham finishes his novel. He dozes against the same window, smudged from where his cheek constantly presses against it. The other man completes sketch after sketch, traces racing raindrops with his fingertips, mutters to himself as he flips through notebooks. Leaves turn to fire then die in the fading sunset, until their evening rides are taken in darkness. Day in, day out, the comfort of their cyclical monotony perpetuates.
Until one blustery morning.

Summary
“Let me,” he says, voice quieter than intended.
And just like that Alhaitham slips it on without pretense, thumb tracing the divots in a reverence that surprises him.
Silence follows. Both rings shine synonymously, hands a solid weight against each other. Alhaitham doesn’t disengage, stomach swooping like a falcon in freefall as Kaveh stares wide-eyed down at their fingers.

Summary
Alhaitham doesn’t know why he can’t shut it out—he’s heard it all before, doesn’t care to indulge. But with Kaveh it’s like the penultimate chapter of a story, the hushed moment before the dramatic curtain opens and the final act is revealed. Simply put, Alhaitham needs more.
So he blocks out the nose of distraction everywhere else: the Akademiya, the city streets, even his own mind when necessary. But not Kaveh. Never Kaveh.

But here, now, Kaveh looks at Alhaitham like he knows him. Like they're anything but strangers.
He does. They are.
They're so much more than that and they both know it. You can't throw away a decades worth of friendship and hatred and joy and heartache away in a single movement.
They knew each other. They know each other now.
But the difference between now and then is that today, instead of going home together, they will go their separate ways.
Alhaitham, to the empty home they once shared.
Kaveh, to the new life he's building.

It's now that Al-Haitham gets a good look at Kaveh, his angry expression sending a lance of shameful heat through him. Kaveh looked good like this, so open and raw, the polished and kind Light of Kshahrewar shaking in his anger.-

“Why does it not–” Kaveh’s voice ripped out in a whine. “Have you not thought about it at all since then?”
A long pause. The longest one yet. “Who says I haven’t?”
Lightning flashed through the window, illuminating Al-Haitham’s face. Half of it was still wrapped in shadow, blocked by Kaveh’s head, but he could see the distance between them measured, laid flat by the light. The lightning went. The room went dark. But the memory of Al-Haitham’s wide eyes did not leave him.
What did he want?
“Have you?” asked Kaveh.
“Have you?” Al-Haitham’s voice was so quiet, buried under the murmur of the rain.
Kaveh swallowed. “I mean…I thought that was obvious.”
Kaveh accidentally sleeps with Al-Haitham. And then...keeps sleeping with him.

“WHY DO YOU KNOW MY DOORDASH ORDER,” Kaveh yells, typing furiously into his phone and brandishing the app in Al-Haitham’s face. “I PLACED THE ORDER RIGHT BEFORE I WALKED THROUGH YOUR DOOR.”
Al-Haitham is a tarot card reader. Kaveh is skeptical.
