Her dad sighs, leaning back against the bench and placing a hand at her back, glancing apologetically over at Will. “She’s been going through this shy phase,” he says conspiratorially.
Will laughs. “Personally, I’ve been going through a shy phase for almost three decades, so. I get it.”
The guy snorts. “Fair enough.” He peers down at his daughter, who’s still hiding her face in his t-shirt, and smiles a little as he pats the top of her head. “I’m Mike, by the way."In which Will meets a very cute guy, with an even cuter daughter.

Mike’s been waiting 737 days for this exact moment, always too intimately aware of every single second that’s passed him by since he disappeared. “You’re alive,” he tells him, stupid and reverent. This time, it seems to get through to Will. He watches the hard exterior recede, exposing the gentle warmth that Mike has always admired
“I’m alive,” Will repeats. “I’m alive.” He lets out a hysterical giggle and suddenly he’s the one falling into Mike, limbs tangling and hands clutching at each other until he can’t tell where one of them ends and the other begins. “And you’re here. You came for me.”
Will’s fingers dig into his forearms. Mike swallows the instinctive I would always come for you on the tip of his tongue.
OR: Even after watching Will get trapped in the Upside Down for good, Mike never stopped believing he was alive. After stumbling upon a gate two years later, he takes a chance and learns to finally follow his heart.

But I’m not an idiot, Mike,” Dustin had responded, making Mike promise that he’d be on his best behavior, to which Mike swore there was nothing to worry about, before hanging up and feeling a pit in his stomach he didn’t know what to do with.
It's 1994, and Mike has a wedding to attend.

A lump forms in the back of Will’s throat. If he sits here for long enough, he’ll think of a million different reasons why he shouldn’t do this. He can hear Hopper’s stern but worried voice in the back of his mind, Just be careful, Will, and he can practically see the fear in his mom’s eyes. They shouldn’t have to be this scared. Will shouldn’t have to be this scared.
After all he’s been through to get to this point, doesn’t he deserve to get to dance with his boyfriend at prom?

Mike squeezes his hand again, and Will closes his eyes tightly. His head is pounding even worse now, and this car feels too small. Everything is just too much.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Mike asks. He’s speaking in that voice again—gentle and warm, inviting Will to open up and bare his heart to him. “What did he show you, Will?”

“W-what if it’s not him?” Will croaks. Once again, Mike’s face just falls, and Will shakes his head slightly, tears welling in his eyes. “What if… what if this is all just in… in my head? A-and that’s… that’s why El can’t find him? What if… I’m just making all this up?”
For a few moments, Mike is just quiet. He looks like he’s trying to figure out what to say, so Will takes another shuddered breath. “I-I feel like I’m going insane, Mike,” he admits, hating the way his voice cracks. “It’s like… like I don’t… have control of my own mind anymore… I-I just feel like I’m… like I’m going crazy.”
