Shane’s head snaps up at the mention of the Boston captain, eyes locking with Hayden’s. His friend looks amused, motioning to his phone.
“No, what about him?” Shane asks, trying to sound casual.
“He got some girl’s name tattooed on his leg. Apparently he was out partying with his team after their win and got it done. An Instagram post is going viral about it.”

Yeah, maybe Yuna should have just responded to the frantic texts. But Shane never gave them any details about the people he was dating. This Lily seemed genuinely worried, and if a phone call would get her a better read on the girl, that would be a coincidence at best. Shane knew she preferred talking on the phone, and if she used her own phone, she’d avoid invading any more of his privacy.
She figured his current condition would be a higher priority to address than his mother calling the girl he was seeing. He’d be satisfied that his Lily would know how he was doing, and Yuna would be satisfied to connect with this girl who seemed to enchant his serious and stoic son. The phone rang twice before Yuna was sent to voicemail.
"Hi. This is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail."
Yuna may have miscalculated.

It seemed to Ilya like they invented a silly little holiday for every week of the year. Holiday for disguising children and sending them to bully neighbors for sweets. Holiday for pranks. Holiday to buy cheap shit at stores the day after after another holiday of eating dry bird. Holidays that seem mostly about getting black-out drunk.
There are too fucking many.
Ilya assumes Shane doesn't care about Valentine's Day. Rookie mistake.

He goes to the fridge to look for the bell peppers, and while he’s in there, he says, “It was a good first kiss. As far as I could tell. I hadn’t really kissed anyone before.” He takes an orange bell pepper from the bag his mom brought over and brings it over to the counter. “Not anyone I really wanted to kiss anyway.” He cuts the top and bottom off the pepper and then works on cutting out the seeds. “Ilya’s a good kisser,” he adds. And he can’t believe he’s just said that out loud to his mom.
