He knew he was a masochist, that there was a high chance that he was signing up for a heartbreak. That Henry might reject him, and point blank avoid the party. That Henry might not even want to speak to him at his own party. That Henry might come with someone else already, or hook up with someone else. Fuck, he might even fuck someone else in his own bed. There were so many ifs that could happen…
....but in his head, this was the way that it needed to go. He felt it in his bones. This seemed right.
Henry would come, he’d see him, and when Alex asked him for some alone time…he’d agree.

Smacking the modem again, Alex knew his efforts were fruitless. He reset the stupid thing four times now and nothing worked. His only option was smacking it, and that didn’t work either. Glancing out of the window he noticed the snow started coming down a little bit harder, but not enough to cause Internet issues, he didn’t think so
“Fucking hell.” He smacked the modem again, saying a silent prayer - but instead of coming back to life all of the lights went out. Dead.

He’s going to disappoint Henry. Surely, he’s going to fire him for the lack of accountability. It’s an important project too, it’s meant to be released the day after Christmas.
or - Alex narrates books for Henry’s publishing company. Right as he was ready to submit his latest project, his Internet up and died. This leaves him with the only option - drive three hours to Henry’s cottage in the woods—in the middle of a snow storm.

Summary
Alex frantically unlocks his phone and stares at their text thread, at the heart reaction that Henry had left on his most recent message. His thumbs hover uselessly over his screen, trembling as moisture burns his vision. The entire room is thick with uneasiness, heavy enough that it’s hard to breathe, and Alex wants to tell Henry something, wants to reach out and find the solace that Henry so often offers him without even realizing it.
But mostly, as his brain finally catches up to what’s actually happening, all Alex can think is that he doesn’t want to die.
He tries to come up with a list of reasons why in his head, a comprehensive one that probably should include family and career goals and a million other things, but in the end, in the moment, all he can fucking think about is Henry.
