Summary
"I don't need her to be my girlfriend. Things are fine how they are."
"Are they, though?" Whitaker pressed. He seemed to have found his feet beneath him, like he'd brushed the solid ground beneath the metaphorical waves and gotten brave. Stupid of him, because Trinity was not having this conversation while they were surrounded by coffee hipsters and macrame plant hangers.

Summary
A hand plucks the bottle from Trinity's grip before she can open it and she spins around with an affronted noise.
“Do I even want to know what’s in this?” Yolanda inspects the label, eyes narrowing at the tiny letters with the same focus she reserves for surgical cases.
“Probably not. Doubt it will kill me, though.”

Summary
The cold hits them the moment the restaurant door swings shut. One second, Trinity is laughing, her breath warm in her chest, growing into a bubble of happiness she's keeping unexamined. The next, winter is clawing its way under her coat and down through the gap where her scarf isn't tucked in properly. The sidewalk is a patchwork of yellowing snow, blackened slush, and slick, glassy stretches where the city never quite got enough salt down.
Yolanda shifts automatically closer, like their bodies are homing beacons to each other. Her arm brushes Trinity's as they walk, a cautious nudge every couple of steps. "I told you to wear a thicker coat," she says when she catches the way Trinity immediately shudders against a gust of cold air.

Summary
"She’s different now, honey. There’s something—I don’t know what happened out there, but she’s not the same as you remember. Just don’t take it personally."
Deb’s words rattle around Jackie’s skull as she stands outside the hospital room. The plain wooden door seems to mock her. Why can’t she grab it? Why is she just standing there?
"She’s not the same as you remember."
Jackie's appendix ruptures the morning she's supposed to board the plane to Nationals. The flight never makes it to Seattle. Two years later, rescuers find the team alive, and Jackie thinks her nightmare is finally ending. Except the Shauna that returns to their hometown is not the same as the one who left.

Summary
Amidst the screeching sound of the cars colliding, the gravel spray and the weight of Langdon’s tyre making contact with her helmet, the first thought that crossed Yolanda’s mind was that her nieces were watching the incident on the TV. She thought of the fact that her life could have ended in that very instant and what would it have amounted to? Years devoted to her career, friendships neglected, relationships nonexistent, and for what?
All of those championships and no one to share them with.
