Summary
Four years after Prince Zuko had successfully captured the Avatar and returned home, Aang's friends are still struggling to continue fighting without him in a world run by the Fire Nation. Then one night, a small group of Earth Kingdom rebels accidentally run into Prince Zuko during one of their heists – and it seems like the fate of the world could change once again. There's just one small problem...
"I – um, okay –" Sokka shook his head, "mind explaining to me what the hell's going on?"
Zuko was still clearly debating between not wanting to willingly explain anything ever – and shutting Sokka up as quickly as possible.
After a moment's deliberation, he finally replied, "She's my daughter," and then added in an oddly pleading tone, "– please don't make an issue out of this, okay?"
Sokka stared at him, absolutely dumbfounded. "Your daughter... You – you have a child!?"

"Oh great, NOW what??” Sokka flailed both of his hands towards the boy. "When I said we could loot some stuff from the Royal Palace, I didn’t mean THIS!!"
As usual, Katara ignored his extremely valid point.
"We need to hurry," she said, as if Sokka didn’t already know that, it was his plan, "- can you carry him, Sokka? We have to take him with us."

“Yeah,” he answers, his voice almost inaudible over the faint crackling of the torch. “I know.”
Or: Sokka's in love with Zuko. Zuko knows this. Zuko's in love with Sokka. Sokka knows this.
They're not meant to be in love. Everyone knows this.

[Time passes oddly. Between one second and the next, Sokka has the Fire Lord pinned to the wall with his hands around the bastard’s throat. Golden eyes (one gold eye, his mind whispers) widen in shock.
“Sokka?” he chokes out. And then he smiles.
What the fuck?
“Sokka, I—”
Sokka slams his head against the wall, once, twice, and the smile wipes off his face. Good.
“What,” Sokka bites out, “have you done to my sister?”]
Or:
An injury leaves Sokka with amnesia. His last memory is of the failed invasion, of leaving his father behind in enemy territory on the Day of Black Sun. Of hopelessness. Rage.
But then he wakes up, and the war is over. Suddenly, he must come to terms with the fact that years have passed, and that he's somehow the Southern Water Tribe Ambassador to the Fire Nation. He is also supposedly friends with banished-Prince-turned-Fire-Lord Zuko, of all people. Close friends.

Summary
Zuko had never excelled at anything. Azula was a prodigy. Uncle always knew what to say. And Father... Father was strong, iron-like. But Zuko had only ever been good at surviving. Putting one foot in front of the other in a grim show of stubborn determination, gritting his teeth and bearing it. Survival was all he had ever been taught. He knew how to do it. So when he was kidnapped by the Southern Water Tribe, he expected to fight as he always had. He didn’t expect to be taught instead how to live.
In a warring land, the Water Tribe forgave the enemy in an act of defiance. For this, he was torn from them, and this time, his wounds won't heal so easily.
Forced back into nothing but survival, the last person Zuko expected to see was Hakoda's son. Hakoda was a promise of safety. The relentless blue of Sokka’s eyes was a promise of happiness. Zuko could have both if he just reached out his hands, but he found them clutching into fists. After all, he’d been burned one too many times.
But hey, at least between Hakoda and Sokka, Zuko could appreciate the family resemblance of pure, asinine stubbornness.

“I thought you meant a fight! Not this!” It is an odd sensation, the vibration against his whole torso as Zuko grumbles. “Please tell me you have an idea of how to change me back.”
Or: Zuko pisses off a spirit, and faces the consequences. Sokka finds the entire thing hilarious.

Zuko bows again, lower this time, clearly subservient. It’s like the weight of the moment is physically bearing down on his shoulders; Zuko, the son of a genocidal tyrant, bowing to a man from a race his father tried to annihilate. A prince of the Fire Nation willingly submitting, volunteering to devote his life to the protection of a future chief of the Water Tribes. This is the kind of moment that echoes throughout history.
“…dude.” Sokka’s eyebrow, if possible, jumps higher. “Anyone ever tell you you come on a little strong?”
After an attempt on the future chief’s life by those who oppose the unification of the Water Tribes, it is decided that he, as a non-bender, requires a bodyguard to ensure his safety. A young prince of the Fire Nation is granted the privilege and honour of the task.
Zuko, after about a day and a half spent with Sokka, privately thinks it’s a fucking miracle no one’s tried to murder him before.
