Sumeru is a vast and complex nation with problems of ethnocentrism and ethnonationalism touched upon in the game but never explored. Sethos, the newest addition to the region's ensemble, should have been able to tie up all the loose ends left at the end of the Archon Quests.

In this round-up of my notes and thoughts on a previous Sethos character study, I break down my thoughts and understanding on Sumeru's narrative, philosophical inspirations and influences, and why there are three Rtawahist scholar NPCs in the Sumeru Archon quest.

“So, like,” Stelle says as they start hiking to the next checkpoint. He’s getting a bad feeling about this. “Are you Bailu’s dad?”
Dan Heng pulls himself out of the snow drift he fell into, coughing and sputtering. Dusting snow off of his coat, he glares at the hysterically laughing Stelle. “Of course not! Stop being ridiculous.”
“Are you sure? Or is this another ‘Dan Feng is her dad and I’m not him’ situation?” Stelle pulls herself together, but just barely. “You were talking about all that stuff about the old Imbibitor Lunae and his sin and breaking the cycle of reincarnation and stuff so I kind of figured…”
“You figured wrong.” Dan Heng snaps. “Besides, Vidyadhara reincarnate. We can’t bear children.”
“Believe me, I’ve heard plenty about your infertility,” Stelle rolls her eyes. What does she mean by that? “But you’re still Bailu’s dad, I think.”
Bailu stows away on the Astral Express. They take the long way back to the Luofu.

Jing Yuan masterfully plays off a snort of laughter as a cough. "A disciple? Lady Fu, with all due respect ... I believe I have very little to offer in that regard. Despite being trained by a sword champion, I am hardly even a passable swordsman, in my own estimation ... and I certainly lack the accolades typical of someone who's held the position of Arbiter-General for this long a tenure. I am merely an old man who has managed to fail upwards." A pause, and then he adds more softly, "It would be unfair of me."
Or: Jing Yuan takes on a pint-sized disciple in spite of himself. It is everything and nothing like what he had expected, all at once.
