Sydney couldn’t blame him when his own observant nature was a sixth sense drilled into him by necessity.
He chewed on the inside of his cheek, gauging what he could say—what he could admit—that wouldn’t scare the counselor off.
“You don’t want to hear it, it’s pathetic.” He argued weakly.
Rowan let out a dry laugh. “Last week, I cried so hard I puked on your floor. I think pathetic doesn’t even begin to cover how you’ve seen me.”
Or, Sydney's habits lead him to desperate places. Rowan just so happens to be there to keep him company, and they talk about what keeps them up at night.

There are pros and cons to every decision. It’s a simple fact of life, opportunity cost and all.
In the back of a drawer, Sydney Sargent keeps a folded piece of paper, with a list. It’s not yet old enough to have yellowed with age, but the edges are most certainly frayed.
It has moved homes with him, to dorm rooms, and across state lines. Every once in a while, he picks it up and unfolds it, scribbling a new addition to the crude chart.
