Kyojuro had stood at the edge of the engawa, sun catching in his hair, smile wide and certain. Not a boast. Not bravado. Just that bright, effortless confidence that made everything around him seem lighter.
Senjuro had believed in that smile once.
Now he wasn’t sure what he should believe in.
He didn’t think about peace. He didn’t think about healing. Only one goal echoed in his mind:
Find and behead the demon who killed Kyojuro.

Akaza tilts his head, far more amused than he has any right to be. “What would your brother have done?”
“He’d never give up. He would become better than you, and then he’d kill you.” Quitting wasn’t ever an option for Kyojuro, ever. Senjuro shakes his head. “I’m not my brother though.” The pain and weight of that sentence runs deeper than Senjuro could ever hope to convey; Deeper than he cares to admit, even on the nights he lays awake, blanketed in his own failures.
“So you’re ready to give up then?”
“No,” he answers, more confidently than expected.
Akaza smirks. “Then perhaps you’re more similar to him than you realize.”
