He’s been vigilant over his three closest friends since they were kids, and they’re seniors now, which means the stakes are higher than they ever were when he was thirteen. You know what’s never hurt him? Hot chocolate, that’s what. Bucky thinks a nice, dark mug of hot chocolate is damn near blissful: just the kind of pleasurable thing he’s signing up for from now on.
Unless someone—someone whose name rhymes with Damn Pill-son, perhaps—heats the milk up for too freakin’ long in the microwave so that it nearly scalds his mouth when he tries to take a sip.

"They said the sprinkles are illegal," Bucky repeated calmly, his face alarmingly neutral for a man who was predisposed to frowning.

He was always doing that, now—giving Steve a look when he called him ‘Buck’ or ‘Bucky,’ as if it took him aback. Steve wondered what he thought when he heard it, remembered his words under the overpass: Who the hell is Bucky? Was that what ran through his mind, even now? He closed his eyes, forced himself to take a steady breath in. We’re going to figure it out. He’s going to remember. It’s just going to take some time, that’s all.
