    Summary

Three-and-one-third bodies have been found in an abandoned vehicle on the riverbank.

It would be a challenging case even without the bad weather, weapons smuggling, white nationalists, industrial accidents, and the concept of pedigree dog breeds—but over it all hangs one troubling question: What is it that fascinates you about Kim Kitsuragi? Is it working class camaraderie? A sinister hex of mysterious origin? Did you imprint on him in Martinaise, like an amnesiac duckling? If you don’t figure out what’s going on soon, people are going to start to notice. Especially him.

And sooner or later? Everything is related to the case.

For a moment, he appears otherworldly in the orange-and-red glow, smoke gathering around him. You blink the awe out of your eyes; it’s not a delusion, it’s astigmatism. You probably shouldn’t drive at night until you get that looked at.

It can’t be deliberate, of course. It’s a flagrant breach of protocol. Not something Kim Kitsuragi would do without good reason, and you are not that.

    Summary

KIM KITSURAGI — “You don’t remember what a Divine is,” he says, “but you remember how to jam through a high-security door without setting off the foghorns?”

INTERFACING [Formidable: Success] — It’s less of a door and more of a five-foot cement wall. You have your fingers stuck to the terminal—a chunky, green-tinted machine that has seen better days. Some of the wiring is exposed on the side.

HAND/EYE COORDINATION [Challenging: Success] — It feels good, going through the motions. Holding cables down with one hand, scraping the lid off with a rusted knife while Kim shines a light on your hands. Familiar.

YOU — “Yeah, hey, I guess it’s like running.” You flash a grin at him. “Or riding a bike.”

KIM KITSURAGI — He squints at you.

ENCYCLOPEDIA [Medium: Success] — A bicycle—or bike—is a millenia-old outdated concept, let alone a reality. There isn’t enough space here in Counterweight for people to drive bicycles—it’s all traffic and hurried passerby. The domes are cramped and not vehicle-friendly.

    YOU — Bummer.

KIM KITSURAGI — “In any case, I’m not sure most people would have ‘circuit disabling skills’ as part of their basic motoric accoutrements.”

    Summary

“Kim,” you say, and he blinks at you in the middle of putting out his hand. “There’s something fucked up going on.”

“You must be from the 41st. I’m Lieutenant Kim Kitsuragi—though you seem to know that already.” He seems tense, for some reason—and his hand is still out. “I’m afraid I wasn’t told who you are.”

“It’s me, Harry! Kim, don’t you remember me? Fuck, there’s something really wrong happening.”

“If you’re referring to the dead body that has been hanging from a tree for seven days—then yes, I agree. It is pretty wrong.” Kim is looking at you with his mouth slightly pursed. There’s no recognition in his eyes—he looks at you like you’re a stranger.

“This can’t be happening." Kim clears his throat.

“You are clearly going through… something. But I would appreciate it if we could focus on the case for the moment.”

“Oh my god,” you say. “We did it already, Kim, but for some reason I’m the only one who remembers! This is some—some cosmic joke from the universe, I’ll tell you that.”

“Okay,” Kim says, slowly. “I’m going to give you a moment while I talk to the manager. You’re going to sit down and sort out whatever it is you’re doing. And then we’re going to take down that corpse.”

“You know, this probably won’t change anything, but it’s nice to leave a tangible mark on the world for a while,” you tell him as you reach up to paint the line of the T. There’s a sharp inhale behind you. When you look back, Kim is staring at you with a flat mouth, hand half-raised towards you.
