He listens to people pass him by; listens to the blood rushing through their veins, the drunken and off key singing, the low murmurs of lovers whispering to each other. It’s all familiar, like coming home after some time away.

For just a second, Buck thinks he sees his parents share a look out of the corner of his eye, but he chalks it up to paranoia. They didn’t know this about Buck, so they’re probably just caught off-guard—and anyway, Buck doesn’t care what they think.
