“Hello.” Her low, full voice held a hint of confusion. It was almost eleven at night.
“I know it’s late…” His voice trailed off. He wasn’t overcome with emotion, just the opposite. A void lived where Jaime’s grief should be and he was reluctant to reveal it, even to Brienne.
“It’s fine. I wasn’t asleep.” There was the clink of dishes on her end. Jaime imagined her collecting the last teacup of the day and putting it in the sink. When he didn’t say anything she stilled, then asked, “What’s going on, Jaime?”
He held his head in his hand, measured his breathing. “Tywin’s dead. I was hoping you’d…” He paused, pinching the bridge of his nose. It had been selfish to call her. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have–”
“Don’t wimp out on me now, Lannister.”
“Will you go home with me to settle the estate? I know it’s a lot to ask. We’ll both miss a couple of weeks of work…and the teachers’ lounge gossip will be damn near intolerable–”
Her bark of laughter startled him. “You? With me? Oh gods, they wouldn’t…I’m not…” She trailed off with a soft, huffing noise. It made his chest feel tight.

“I’m getting married.” He exhaled the words, loud and quick. After a few frantic inhales he added, “Next month.”
“Okay, that’s…that’s a big decision.” Jaime was dumbfounded. Lancel had never even mentioned having a girlfriend. “Not being judgemental, not at all, but…I don’t even know her name.”
“His.” Lancel cleared his throat and spoke louder, determined. “His name is Galladon, and we’ve been together for almost a year.”
When Jaime’s favorite cousin, Lancel, asks him to be best man at his wedding, Jaime is quick to say yes. What he doesn’t know is that the family Lancel is about to marry into is nothing like the Lannisters. And the maid of honor is about to change Jaime’s life.

Below the hill are fields and fields of flowers and crops, and on the banks of the Mander rests the castle town in Highgarden’s shadow, bustling in the golden late afternoon. She can smell food cooking and woodsmoke from here, only increased by the sheer number of tents and pavilions erected in the few unoccupied fields. Releasing the breath she’d been holding behind her teeth, she turns to the captain of the guard her father insisted accompany her, Amos.
“We could make for that field,” she points, “and make camp there, if permitted. They look to have some space left.”
Behind her comes a girlish scoff. Brienne frowns, and glances back at her sisters, who wear near identical looks of displeasure, though they are far from identical themselves.
“We have been on the road for six weeks,” Arianne says archly. “I, for one, have had quite enough of making camp.”

“Captain Tarth,” Stark interrupted, an emotion in his eyes that Jaime couldn't parse out. The Colonel’s scent flared, nervous. “She goes by the call sign Ace of Hearts, correct?”
“She does…she did.” Jaime forced the words from his throat.
He had given her the name at the end of fighter training, part jest and part brutal honesty. Brienne was an ace pilot, deadly with a shot. She’d gone on to rack up more enemy downs than anyone else in the squadron. The heart part he’d added as a joke.
From the point of view of someone who’d just met her, Brienne had seemed totally unappealing as a mate: intimidating in stature and plain featured, unrelentingly forthright, uninterested in playing nice, or coy, or cute. Her bland beta scent had only reinforced the complete lack of appeal.
Irony was a godsdamned bitch. The only heart Brienne had claimed was his.
