It was fine, everything was so much better than it had been in a long time.
But when he was sad or angry or frustrated with himself, Alex missed God. When he met a boy and got cussed out for holding his hand on the street, he spent the night in church. Why couldn’t God exist? He wants to believe that somebody made him like this. That him feeling this way towards guys had a purpose. Or, if it was simply a fuck-up on God’s end, if he was a mistake, then he wanted to at least have somebody to blame for that. But as it stood, he had himself and he had his boys, and that would have to be enough. Eventually, it would be.

Summary
It wasn’t that they didn’t like him, or that he didn’t love them- of course he did. He loved them like he’d never loved anyone in his life. He loved them like the trees loved soil, like the bees loved the flowers. He loved them like his lungs loved the air he breathed. But his lungs tended to stutter, tended to fail- it was the smokes, or it was the city air, and he couldn’t always breathe.
All this to say they couldn’t always love him. And that was okay. Bobby couldn’t always love himself either.
