The thing is, El has never understood the concept of personal space. Since she came back in 1984, ever since she integrated in their lives so smoothly and so warmly, Mike has had to get used to the fact that El treats distance with him as a personal insult.
To lose her then was to lose a beautiful, wonderful, magical, tragic mystery from a little week of his childhood; to lose her now would be to lose his own heart.

Max says it like she’s stating the weather, thumb holding the comic open where Scott Summers is mid-break, grief drawn in sharp blue lines. His face is ruined with it. His mouth is a soft, useless curve. Max tilts the page so the light catches just right, like the panels might confess something new if you look hard enough.
“For her boyfriend,” she says, tapping the frame where Jean Grey used to be, “to get stronger. Or whatever.” A beat. “Sometimes just so he can be sad. But she always dies at the end.”
