It’s apparent the cell is made for two people, but the space is so minimally decorated that Enid had assumed she was the only inhabitant. And evidently, there is no cellmate present.
“Where is she?” Enid asks, now noting the stack of books on one of the desks.
“In solitary.”
She’s afraid to ask, but the guard’s gradual shift in tone—strict and no nonsense, to almost hesitant—and her own undying curiosity get the better of her.
“What for?”
“Strangling a guard with her braid. She was quite unhappy to hear that she has a new bunkmate.”
Or, in which, Enid’s stint in prison with a notorious cellmate is challenging—until it’s not.

Wednesday has only spent a few weeks at Nevermore, but she sure has made herself a reputation. Known to never show the slightest weakness, most students fear her. But Enid sees her in a way that no other student does, and she can’t shake an alarming suspicion:
