As a mountain climbing guide on Mount Everest, George’s main goal each year is to get his clients to the top and back down without any accidents. The mountains are his home, and they’re where he’s happiest.
Unfortunately, this year his former best friend, Dream, will be on the mountain too. George hasn’t spoken to Dream since one terrible day nearly three years prior.

George’s eyes must have widened, because Dream doubled back. “Okay, you don’t shout music at one another, but you don’t hold back. There’s this, like, bigness and intensity and vulnerability that I’m obsessed with. I saw this one place that referred to it as a capella heavy metal. It’s so, like, epic. And "One Household" is one of my favorites because it’s a secular piece, but there’s something holy there, you know?”
There was room for George to answer, but he sort of hated it. He was twenty-six and on his own but he felt like a little kid with the wants of his grandmother tangled around his lungs. “I’m not religious,” he said, choking on string.
“Me neither.” Dream said it like it didn’t matter. “But I still feel it."

The brunet seemed to consider this for a moment, then leaned forward until their faces were inches apart; a direct challenge. Clay could feel the boy's breath softly ghosting onto his face.
"George Davidson."
Clay's smile grew as he tallied himself a point. "Well, my name is Clay Dream. It's very nice to meet you, George."
George stared straight into his eyes, a light going off in them that signaled his intense disapproval of Clay's condescending tone. The boy leaned back in his seat but didn't relax. After a single moment, the dark eyes discarded him.

Everyone loves Clay... everyone, that is, except for the sarcastic, edgy guy in the third row of Clay's English Language class.Clay has always enjoyed a challenge, but he never thought that it would be so hard to get someone to notice him.
George has always enjoyed staying away from people like Clay, but he never thought that it would be so hard to ignore him.
