Kaito's farm is burned and salted under royal order, which prompts him to take up the title of Hero and go vanquish the demon prince who, everyone assures him, has been whispering madness into the divine Queen Junko's ear since the day she spared him execution as a thief and took him in as her son.
Kaito finds out pretty fast that his chances as a peasant of ever even getting to see the royals is minimal at best, and saving the queen impossible at worst. Until a masked thief's interference drastically changes both Kaito's odds... and the certainty of his goal.

Damn, Ouma thinks, I’m getting predictable.
“I overheard those fuckers on the way to breakfast this morning,” Iruma continues. To punctuate the statement, she picks up her travel mug and takes a big swig of her coffee. Iruma skipping out on sleep is nothing new to Ouma. She practically runs on a bad combination of coffee, monster energy drinks, and plain sugar. None of his business, though. “They’re gonna matchmake Shit-hara and Homota.”

There's nothing Kokichi Ouma hates more than boredom. Well, except for maybe Kaito Momota and his annoying sidekicks that are so obviously in love with him. On a particularly boring day, and after witnessing yet another display from Kaito, Shuichi, and Maki, Kokichi gets an idea for a new prank. He writes a fake secret admirer note and gives it to Kaito, in hopes he'll think one of his friends wrote it. What he doesn't expect though is the chaos that begins when the letter gets passed around the entire 79th class, with each person thinking someone else wrote it for them.

“It’s funny,” Kokichi says, mumbly and sleep-slurred, and Kaito only realizes that his own eyes have been closed after he opens them, “how we don’t get to go home after this. Because home doesn’t even exist.” He snorts a little on his next exhale. “It’s funny, right?”
No, Kaito thinks, but stays quiet.
And then Kokichi says, “Merry Christmas,” and rolls over.
A beat goes by. Kaito frowns.
“What?”
A few weeks ago, Kaito woke up from a simulation in which he and his friends were forced to brutally murder one another. Now it's Christmas.

He feels it against his shoulder when Miu shakes her head. “Nah. You get outta bed at ass o’clock way too much for it to fuck me up now. Besides, you left the door open.”
Ah, yeah. She probably got cold. Kokichi snickers at the reminder and only stops when Miu grabs and yanks on his ear.
“That’s so mean,” Kokichi whines without heat, reaching up to rub the shell of his ear.
“You deserved it,” Miu retorts, before relaxing again. “You excited?”
Obviously Kokichi is excited. He gives Miu a bit of a side-eye at the obvious question. At the same time, though, he can understand why she asked; she probably feels a bit insecure about how much she misses Kaito, a bit clingy… she needs affirmation that Kokichi too is feeling what she feels in order to verbalise it. Unfortunate that Kokichi doesn’t actually deal in mushy gushy feelings like that, not in the slightest… but he can still throw Miu a bone.
“Nope! I haven’t missed that big lug for even a second!”

Kokichi pulls the lever to the MonoMono Slot Machine for what feels like the thousandth time that day. He almost doesn't register the diagonal line of sevens flashing down his screen, indicating that he's hit the jackpot. Again.
Slots aren't nearly as fun as some of the other games in the casino, but Kokichi has his strategy down to a science; unfortunately, the most mind-numbingly boring game present is also the quickest and easiest way to earn coins without risking too much. He's been playing all morning and into the afternoon, careful to keep an ear out for any of the others. He would hide if they came near, of course—he's public enemy number one right now, so there's a high chance of someone trying to kill him—but no one bothers. The casino is, unsurprisingly, not a very popular place to go the morning after witnessing a friend get executed.

“Well, uh, I found out that you were all hosting a haunted house,” Kaito says as he sneaks a glance through the classroom door. It’s too dark inside to make anything out properly. Kaito shudders. “And, you know, just wanted to see how it was going.”
“It’s going tremendously!” Sonia answers with a pump of her fists. “I am personally making sure that this haunted house is going to be the scariest one on the planet!” She claps her hands together with an excited gasp. “Please tell me that you’re going to visit it, right?!”
Kaito plasters a fake smile on his face. “Of course I am!”

She’s expecting Himiko or Angie, the only short people in the facility who would have cause to come after her right now, but instead it’s Ryoma, looking up at her from beneath the rim of his beanie and raising his eyebrows like he doesn’t know what her problem is. Tenko deflates, losing hot air like one of those blimps. “Oh. Hoshi-san. Sorry. Tenko didn’t realise.”
“No, no,” Ryoma says, still a touch cautiously, his hands raised to reveal his palms. “All good.” He pauses, shuffles his weight. “You, uh, you want some space, kid?”
Tenko presses her knuckles into her eyelids. The honest answer is yes, she does.

But now things are different. Alec gets to see Fiore in a different light, viewing her not as a cunning, manipulative mastermind, but as a child lost in this world. When problems come to light, Alec is forced to face himself and the possibility that he might have more in common with Fiore than he would like to admit.
