Will froze. Absolutely froze.
His hand was buried in Mike Wheeler’s hair. Mike - who was practically draped over him now - looked blissful. Borderline euphoric. His eyes had fluttered half-shut. There was a tiny, content smile on his lips.
Will stared down at him, heart doing somersaults.
“Uh,” Will said intelligently.
Mike made another sound - soft, almost dreamy - and nudged Will’s hand, encouraging, needy without even realising it.
Will’s brain short-circuited.
💕💕💕💕
The first time Will runs his fingers through Mike’s hair, it’s an accident.
The second time… maybe not so much.
Before long, Mike is leaning into every touch, Will is desperately trying not to make it weird, and the Party is very, very done with them.

“How’d you manage it, anyway?” Mike asked, trying to sound casual and failing a little. “I mean, I knew you could do it, but,” he gestured vaguely with his hands. “How did you actually do it? Tap into the hive?”
Will’s cheeks flushed pink at once. He glanced away, eyes dropping to the tiled floor.
“I thought about my mom,” he said softly. “And Jonathan. About when I was a little kid. And…” He hesitated, then looked back up. “And you.”

In the aftermath of season 5 episode 4, Mike cleans the dirt from Will’s skin and realises he’s been in love with his best friend for years. The world can wait. Just for a moment.

He was happy for Will. He was. He wanted Will to have someone. Someone who made him smile like that, even if it hurt to look at. Even if it made something ugly and sharp crawl around inside Mike’s chest.
Because this wasn’t about Mike.
This was about Will finally being honest. Being able to be himself.
And Mike was going to be okay with it.
He had to be.

Except for the part where he’s weirdly upset about Will having a crush on Lucas.

Mike ignores the bilious feeling that swims in his gut as he scoops fruit punch into their cups, his mind tortuously replaying that girl’s hand sliding over Will’s shoulder while he does. He shoves the mental image away.
Steve’s words ricochet in his mind. Carpe diem. Seize the fucking day. So stupid.
