Because it turns out the Halo can want things now, sort of. Not the way a human would, with thoughts or motivation or articulable desires. The Halo wants things the way a tree wants water and shoves a taproot through flagstone to get it, which is all well and good for the tree, but less so for the idiot trying to keep her patio intact.
