“You do not believe in this cause,” Enjolras continued. Grantaire heard him push his chair away and stand. “You believe in nothing but fictions. You believe in a marble statue that doesn’t exist.” Light footfalls on the wooden floor. Enjolras took practiced steps. Grantaire could feel the gaze on his back and closed his hand into a fist.
“Cast me out, then. You know who I am, ask me to leave.” Grantaire bit the words as though they might burn him if he held them on his tongue.
“Do you want me to?” Enjolras asked plainly.At some point before the revolution truly begins in earnest, Grantaire writes a description of each member of Les Amis in a journal. Upon discovery, this prompts several difficult conversations about what he wrote. Prompted by a thought I had many years ago that the descriptions of Les Amis in the book read as thought they were written by someone in the group. I expanded upon that idea until it turned into musings about aromanticism and love.
