Tsireya’s grin became softer, disregarding the first part of what he had told her. “Lo’ak said he does as well,”+ “Eywa has truly given us a beautiful gift…”
⭐
The birds squawked lazily, and a shadow rose out of the water only to fall down with a splash. Kiri didn’t seem affected, but Lo’ak cried out in excitement, Tsireya watching him affectionately. Aonung could feel his anger bubbling up again, but another one of Lo’ak’s yells shook him from his thoughts.Aonung sneered at him, but Lo’ak didn’t seem to notice, too busy pointing at whatever had blocked the horizon just a moment ago. There was another series of splashes to which Tsireya clapped her hands in joy. Aonung swore to Eywa he would never get this excited by a sea animal playing in the water.
“That’s Payakan!” Lo’ak exclaimed, rushing to the ocean’s front to call for an ilu. “I told him I wanted to meet him today, and he listened to me!”
“That’s great, Lo’ak,” Tsireya said, smiling. She was beginning to fall into a habit of holding his arm, which Aonung hadn’t failed to notice. Lately, there had been too many instances of the pair getting too close for Aonung’s liking, and it was getting on his nerves. It was a surprise that Lo’ak’s overprotective brother hadn’t done anything about it yet, but Aonung vowed to himself that he would continue to separate them, even if it went on for weeks. He cursed himself for believing that they would even stay that long.
⭐
“It’s not like that,” he said, head lowered in embarrassment.“It better not be,” came a deep voice from Aonung’s left. He looked towards the sound and discovered it was Neteyam, who he was beginning to hate less and less.
⭐
“Even my name?” Aonung questioned. “I thought you...” His chest felt like it was compressing, and he made a vague gesture at what he was trying to say. When Lo’ak only stared at him quizzically, Aonung forced himself to say, “I thought you hated me.”Lo’ak chest rose and then fell; he was struggling with an answer. “I do sometimes,” was all he managed. “But not enough to not talk about you.”
⭐
“It’s only if you want to, y’know.” His tail lashed through the air as he awaited a response. “Aonung, if you don’t-”Just as Aonung was about to cut him off, tell him that he would love to, there was a sound from somewhere close by. Lo’ak’s ears perked up in relief and he turned around to look over his shoulder, braids swinging. That expression was soon replaced by a look of absolute horror.
“Shit! It’s Neteyam!”
⭐
He had told her ‘no’, but that wasn’t what was bothering him. It was the fact that he had felt defensive as he had said it, like he wanted to keep Lo’ak all for himself.
⭐
Hearing Lo’ak open up to him, Aonung felt ashamed at what he had said to his sister the morning before. All he does is talk about his problems. He was oblivious to the fact that the Lo’ak he knew at the time wasn’t even close to the Lo’ak he was now discovering. Piece by piece, Lo’ak was giving himself over to Aonung.
⭐
“Being sad is not going to help you,” Aonung told him, feeling something in his heart shift. “It will only make you feel worse.”Lo’ak attempted a grin but gave up when he couldn’t achieve one. “Well what if I want to be?”
Aonung smiled, reaching behind his back, knowing Lo’ak wasn’t paying attention. “Then I will not let you.”
⭐
“What do you think you’re doing?” came a stern voice from above them. Aonung didn’t register it at first, but he froze, arms going limp. “Lo’ak, why are you.. sitting on top of Aonung?”Lo’ak scrambled to get off of him, panting. His face was flushed, and he made every effort not to look at Aonung. “Kiri, it’s not what you thi-”
Aonung reddened at the thought of what Lo’ak was implying.
“You guys were fighting again!” Tsireya accused, walking over to the trio. She grabbed Aonung by the shoulder. “I am telling father that you are making trouble with Lo’ak for the third time. When do you ever learn from your mistakes?”
⭐
“Come on, star boy,” Aonung said, beckoning Lo’ak away from Kiri. “Let’s leave these losers. The sun is beginning to hide, and I want to show you something.”Lo’ak grinned at Kiri as he fell into step beside Aonung, the pair already walking away from the girls. He seemed oblivious to what Aonung had called him. She stuck her tongue out at him, and Aonung rolled his eyes at their shared petulance. “Do you guys always act like this around each other?”
Lo’ak shrugged. “Mostly.”
Their voices faded as Kiri and Tsireya were left where they were standing, now with more unanswered questions than ever. “Since when did they become so close?” Kiri muttered, vaguely gesturing at their rapidly disappearing silhouettes. “I thought that they hated each other.”
“Star boy?” Tsireya snorted, unimpressed.

"You know you're kinda cute when you're angry."
+
"-I've also decided to take pity on you. Come on, I'll give you a private lesson."
✨
We walked into the reef water, the water washing the sand stuck to my body away, I grumpily let him pull me further into the ocean. He let go of me finally to start swimming out, I contemplated turning around and making a dash for freedom, but decided against it.
✨
It was only as Ao'nung roamed his eyes over my my face with a burning intensity, did I realease his arm was still tightly wrapped around my waist, holding me snuggly to his front. Well this isn't at all awkward."I'm sure everyone will be excited to see your progress." Ao'nung smiled, his face twisting into one of those deep looks he did, like when we'd first saw him on the beach.
✨
I felt my mood dampen, crossing my arms to sulk.I felt Neteyam grab the back of my neck, "You're definitely not ready to hop on another Ilu yet, baby brother. Stop being a grouch about it, you'll learn soon enough!"
I shook him off, hissing in annoyance. I couldn't help but remember the way Ao'nung's fingers had brushed the same spot, his lips pressing against the sensitive skin...
I looked over at Ao'nung to see him already looking at me, an unreadable look on his face. I glanced away again, Rotxo beginning to explain the arm exercises we were going to practice.
"Let him try."
We all looked at Ao'nung, who was now smirking. "You may be surprised. Let him have a go."
✨
I nodded in acceptance and began to wade out into the water, everyone else following. When I was waist deep I began calling for an Ilu like we'd been taught, one quickly appearing. I heard the water splashing a little before Ao'nung appeared on the other side of the Ilu, he held his hand out for me to take. I only hesitated for a few seconds beore I grabbed it and hoisted myself onto the Ilu's back, getting into the proper stance.
✨
"Lo'ak, I believe in you!" I heard Tuk call out as I began to skim the water shakily, almost making us crash sideways into the water twice.
✨
A large hand pressed against the back of my head, pushing me forwards playfully. "Looks like that private lesson payed off after all, huh?"I turned to glare at Ao'nung, who looked like a smug dick, if I don't say so myself.
"You two had a private lesson?" Neteyam asked, sharing a look with Rotxo.
✨
"Come on Wonderboy, you're with me." Ao'nung said, cutting Tsireya off.
✨
I thought back to when we'd just finished lessons, families starting to retreat to their homes to prepare dinner. Ao'nung had been trailing after us as we started to make the journey back to our marui pod, for some odd reason, trying to get a rise out of me.
✨
Then I heard soft splashes in the water below, someone breathing, a voice whispering my name.
✨
"I have to get back home before my parents realize I'm gone." Ao'nung murmured before pushing himself back into the water. "I'll see you tomorrow Wonderboy!"
✨
"It wasn't a girl! It's not a big deal, it was just Ao'nung. His parents must have made him do it to make up with me after our fight!""Good." Dad huffed. "You're too young to be falling for girls!"
✨
My gaze drifted over to where Ao'nung was standing next to his dad, but his eyes were on me. He was staring at my necklace, a small look of happiness on his face as he roamed over his hard work. I felt almost vulnerable with Ao'nung staring at me like that, it hadn't helped with all the teasing I'd gone through when I stepped back inside home with his necklace on.
✨
"You were at our home last night?" Neteyam asked in horror after a pause."Oh my Eywa, you're all missing the point!" Kiri huffed in exasperation. "The question is why'd you make him a necklace, huh? What are your intentions with my brother? Because if you think you can just try to woo him right in front of our faces then you're sorely mistaken!"
I chocked on my spit, eyes blowing wide as my eyes swivelled back and forth between Kiri and Ao'nung. What? WHAT!?
None of us noticed that the adults had fallen silent, listening to our conversation now with mixed expressions. None of us noticed my dad's face hardening in protection, or my mom holding onto his arm to keep him from stomping over to us. Tsireya was watching from a distance with wide eyes, trying to hide a smile.
✨
I sipped at my soup quietly, aware of the eyes on me. Mom and dad were sitting on either side of me protectively, dad keeping an eye on Ao'nung as his tail flicked around in unease. I wanted to roll my eyes at his show of fatherly overprotectiveness. Neteyam and Kiri were only making things worse, giggling to one another and whispering who knows what. Tsireya also seemed quite amused, bordering pleased, as she watched my siblings laugh to one another.

He flipped around again with a grunt. Though he asked, he knew why - he and Kiri were the most different - the most 'human'. Despite knowing, his heart still desperately clawed for the answer to...
_________
"I have to ask you something... earlier, what you said about disappointing your family... do you really feel that way?"Once he processed the change of pace, Lo'ak gave an amused scoff, "Yeah, man. My parents are legends, my grandmother is tsahík, my family adore my sisters and everyone loves Neteyam because he's- he's perfect. And then me? I'm just a skxawng that 'brings shame to my family'... when anyone notices me, that is. Like, someone would have come looking for me way sooner if they cared."
"Come on now, I'm sure your family care about you. Your brother seemed ready to kill me when he asked where you were."
"Yeah, only because our parents want him to be responsible. If you had a brother like him you'd get it."
_________
It caught the pair of them off guard, causing Ao'nung to lose his balance and land on top of Lo'ak, who swiftly barged him away."See what happens when you mess with me?" he chuckled, "that's the way of water, bitch!"
Ao'nung smiled as he shook his head, "Syorrr-"
"Hey!" a voice shouted.
They both flinched and sat up. It was Neteyam, rushing over with Tsireya in tow. Annoyance had infected his features whilst Tsireya, on the other hand, somehow seemed grief-stricken. Lo'ak glanced at Ao'nung and, to his surprise, his friend had moved away.
"Don't fight!" she yelled as they approached, "Please just stop. What good comes of this?"
Lo'ak threw his brother's arm off as Neteyam attempted to drag him by the arm.
_________
"Nice, for once I don't have to worry about your skxawng ass causing trouble," he released Lo'ak and took a seat between him and Ao'nung.Tsireya eyed the space next to Neteyam idly for a moment but, instead, placed herself beside her favourite student with a smile.
"So, what were you two talking about?"

“What do you want?” Aonung asked finally, voice quiet.
Lo’ak glanced back at the ikran.
“To keep flying,” Lo’ak said softly. “To not pretend the sky stops existing just because I live near water now.”
Aonung frowned. “And you think we would ask that of you?”
“No,” Lo’ak said simply. “But sometimes you look at me like you wish I would.”

That was what defined the Metkayina.
Letting go.
He fitted the hunting harness carefully, checking the straps, ensuring the neural whip lay correctly along the creature’s crest. This was not a bond meant to last beyond necessity. The skimwing accepted it because it trusted him not to abuse it. That trust had taken years to earn.
He wondered, sometimes, what it would be like to never let go.
The thought came unbidden, sharp and brief, and he dismissed it as he always did. It was forest thinking, not his way.
________________
The Sully boy rode with a confidence that seemed woven into his very stance. Not just balance or skill. The ikran dipped, talons nearly brushing the water before surging upward again. There was no hesitation in its movements, no moment of indecision that might betray doubt. A permanent bond. One creature, and one rider for life.Aonung’s thoughts flinched back to what he knew.
The forest clans traveled to the Hallelujah Mountains when youth came of age, seeking the colony of the banshees in a rite called the Iknimaya. They risked life and limb to climb, to balance on the sheer spires of rock, to test themselves against gravity and fear. Only then, when a single ikran chose them, often through aggression, challenge, near‑death struggle did the tsaheylu bind them together. Once bonded, they flew as one. Only one rider per banshee was possible, a lifelong bond that could not be shared or undone. It was dangerous as much as it was sacred.
________________
Aonung noted the way Lo’ak guided his ikran as if the sky and sea existed in harmony, the same way Aonung had learned to ride the skimwing. His creature returned when they chose, trust earned and released, the ikran however had chosen Lo’ak once, and it would never let go.
________________
Jake and Kiri exchanged a glance. Both understood the subtle play unfolding. Aonung’s restraint, Lo’ak’s ease, the reef as both playground and battleground for something unspoken.
________________
And he sure wanted Lo’ak, that forest boy who stood the ground, not against him, but before Aonung’s very new and profound ambition. He would not be allowed to forget it.
________________
He did not admit it to anyone, but he wanted to see Lo’ak again. Not just the ikran, or the skillful, reckless boy who rides with fearless mastery. He wanted the boy beneath him, the one who had once sputtered and flailed, the one who had burned red in the cheeks and refused to yield to the ocean as if the water were an opponent rather than a teacher.
________________
“You are different,” Lo’ak said quietly. “From anyone I've known.”“And you,” Aonung replied, his gaze falling, “are… dangerous.”
________________
Tonowari watched, his arms crossed, eyes sharp but approving. He understood the lesson, and he understood the subtle drama playing out between the two. Trust was never simple. Shared control was never simple. Love, or the beginnings of it, even less so.
________________
The kiss tasted of salt, of freedom, of danger. A kiss that acknowledged the past, the tension, and the slow journey that had led them to this point. A kiss that promised more, without words, but full of trust. - IN FRONT OF HIS FUCKING FATHER NO LESS OMGGGG
________________
“You will not leave,” Lo’ak whispered, voice husky, almost afraid.Aonung shook his head. “Not if you do not let me.”
________________
And for Aonung, the reef would never feel empty again.
________________
Years had passed, and the reef had settled around Aonung like a living, breathing embrace. Its rhythm was familiar now more than ever, the subtle tug of currents, the quiet sway of kelp, the pulse of fish that shimmered like scattered stars beneath the surface. Yet despite the reef’s constancy, nothing had prepared him for a new life with a family, and a strange, enduring ache in his chest that only his husband could soothe.
________________
Aonung watched Lo’ak scoop the child up effortlessly, both of them laughing, and he realized that love was not the sweeping drama he had feared. It was quiet, persistent, messy, beautiful, and terrifying all at once.
