Summary
They tried not to think about it too much, about how they became the Pogues and how the Pogues ended and how the deciding factor in both cases was JJ Maybank. Honestly, most of the time, they tried most of the time to not think about JJ at all if they could, especially now that they were back and settled down in the Outer Banks, grown up and home in Kildare County, and everything looked the same as when they were just kids, just fooling around on a boat in the marsh that July but really nothing would ever be the same again.
Because JJ was gone.
But they still hoped, more than anything that JJ had landed somewhere quiet. They hey hoped JJ’s life was boring in the best way, full of ordinary worries and normal stress. The kind of problems that meant his past wasn’t running the show anymore. He hoped JJ wasn’t still fighting ghosts. That wherever he was, he wasn’t still carrying Luke or Groff around in his head.
And that he wasn’t lying awake worrying about the rest of them.

Summary
JJ Maybank was a Pogue to his core. Maybe not in blood but in heart and Pogues don’t die easy. Somehow, JJ was alive.
He could breathe. As long as he didn’t think about how close he’d come to never doing it again, as long as he ignored the ache in his side and how he’d gotten it, as long as he pushed away Kiara’s screams that still echoed in his head and the way the darkness had swallowed him whole.
As long as he shoved it all down, buried it deep where even he couldn’t reach it—
He’d be fine.

“Yucatan,” she says, before she even realizes the word is leaving her mouth.“You’re not going to jail for this, Jayje,” she cuts him off, looking at JJ, only at JJ.
“I’m not gonna let you.” Her voice is steady, sure. “If you hadn’t stood up for us, no one would have.”
JJ stares at her, eyes flickering back to life, like she’s dragging him back from whatever dark place he had slipped into.“Yucatan?” he says again, like he’s letting himself believe it.
Kiara squeezes his fingers, leans in just a little closer. “Yucatan,” she confirms.

Summary
Shoupe had always kept an eye on JJ Maybank, whether JJ knew about it or not. From the first 911 dispatch to the Maybank house at three to the day JJ declared he didn’t need his help anymore at sixteen, Shoupe watched over him the best way he knew how.
It wasn’t always good enough, but still sometimes things work out in the end.

Summary
This time, when Big John leaves for the weekend, it’s the ocean that calls to John B and JJ, the waves promising escape. They paddle out far, pushing themselves beyond the break, laughing like they’ve left every consequence behind on the shore.

But out on the water, though, he feels a flicker of the kid he used to be. The risk, the thrill, the rush—it’s the closest he gets to feeling alive. Yet, with a little South American weed, a few cold beers, and hours spent reminiscing about how far they’d come, the rain didn’t seem so bad—suddenly turning into something better—complete with a spontaneous proposal and a coastal elopement, proving that stupid things have good outcomes all the time.

Summary
Kiara glanced up from her phone, a smile tugging at her lips. “Wait—does this mean I get to find out your real name? The mystery of the JJ in JJ Maybank?”
John B smirked, “Oh, the lore, Kie. There’s a reason I’m John ‘B.’”
Kiara’s jaw dropped. “No way. Your name’s John?”
JJ rolled his eyes, slouching further into his chair. “Don’t make it a big deal.”
Kiara’s grin widened as she leaned forward. “What’s your middle name?”
For just a second, JJ froze. His smirk faltered, but he quickly plastered it back in place. “Wouldn’t you like to know?” he drawled.
Aka JJ is the last of the Pogues to get his driver’s license.

Summary
She took his hand and pressed it to her chest, just above her heart, hoping to ground him. “You’re part of my life whether you like it or not. I’m choosing you.”
JJ was quiet, staring out at the water, letting her words sink in. “I don’t want to drag you down, Kie. You deserve someone who isn’t…this…this messed up.” His voice was rough, full of self-loathing. “Just go. You don’t need me in your life.”
Kiara took a deep breath, her heart pounding as she realized what she had to tell him. Reaching into her pocket, her fingers trembling, Kiara pulled out a small white stick and held it out to him, her voice barely above a whisper. “It’s too late for that, Jayje.”
Or—a cathartic re-write of Season Four that gives JJ the happy ending he deserves.

Summary
JJ grew up hungry.
Not just the skipped lunch kind of hungry, but the constant ache in your stomach, gnawing at your insides, skipped lunch, didn’t have breakfast or dinner the night before, or even, lunch the day before that kind of hungry.
The kind of hungry that never really left, no matter how much he tried to ignore it.
AKA: a one-shot about JJ Maybank finally having it all. A home. A family. And three home cooked meals a day.
And how it changes him.

Summary
JJ’s shoulder suddenly brushes against hers, and she glances down to see him stretched out beside her. He’s still small—skinny and wiry, all sharp elbows and bony knees that stick out awkwardly whenever he moves. He’s the smallest of the group by far, and she still towers over him by a good couple of inches.
It makes her feel annoyingly smug—stronger, bigger. For now, anyway.
“C’mon Jayje,” she says, nudging him with her shoulder. “You’ve gotta have some plan for your birthday this weekend. It's gonna be the big one-three, man.”
Kiara is absolutely determined to plan the most epic birthday for JJ. Not because she owes him anything or because she feels like it’s what friends do, but because, well, he deserves it. And maybe, just maybe, she wants to see that grin of his a little wider on his special day. But of course, the universe—or maybe just JJ’s cursed streak of bad luck—has other plans.

A joke.
A goddamn lie.

With the truth closing in and the world he thought he knew crumbling around him, the only thing keeping him tethered is Kiara, the girl who’s always believed in him. But can he rise from the wreckage of his past and fight for what really matters before he self-destructs.

Summary
At twelve, JJ was the youngest and smallest of the Pogues, and it was really starting to piss him off. While John B, Kiara, and Pope shot up taller and stronger, JJ felt the sting of still being “the baby.” Determined to prove himself, he took on reckless risks—jumping off cliffs, swimming too far, and picking fights he couldn’t win.
Each bruise felt like a badge of honor.
This weekend, John B and JJ’s first time home alone without Big John looming over them, promised freedom—just two best friends in a house, feeling like kings. But when their wild adventure leads them to the Boneyard, fun quickly turns to disaster thanks to one kook in particular: Rafe Cameron.
